Why Was Halo: The Series Cancelled and Can It Be Revived?

Halo: The Series was cut short by Paramount+ as a cost-cutting measure, but there is still a chance it could continue to a third season on another venue.

What Is It?

Set in the 26th century, this series follows the interstellar war between humanity and the alien Covenant, focusing on the genetically enhanced supersoldier Master Chief as he uncovers secrets about his own origins and the mysterious Halo ringworlds.

Aired: Paramount+, 2022-24, 2 Seasons, Totaling 17 Episodes

Starring: Pablo Schreiber, Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu

Developed By: Kyle Killen, Steven Kane

Why Was It Cancelled?

This series was first announced in 2013 with Steven Spielberg attached as executive producer, but it took a long, slow road to television. After the initial work began, it slipped into Development Hell with several creative teams involved at various stages. It was originally scheduled as a Showtime series, but eventually got moved to Paramount+ because it was seen as a “big broad tentpole show” that was a better fit for streaming. It finally had its premiere in March of 2022, and it performed well for the streaming service, though no viewership numbers were released, and Nielsen was not tracking Paramount+ at that time. The show received a second season renewal, though it did go through yet another turnover of showrunners at that point. Season 2 premiered in February 2024, and it spent five weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, averaging an estimated 360 million minutes of viewing per week during that time. Those were good numbers for a Paramount+ original, but apparently not enough to secure a renewal.

Halo was an expensive series to produce, and the streamer was going through some cost-cutting at that time. Also cancelled was the supernatural drama Evil, even though it was pulling strong viewership numbers as well. Paramount+ appeared to be shifting its strategy for streaming originals in the post-Peak TV era, and it was also preparing for a potential merger. Production companies Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television did shop the property around, but apparently none of the other venues were interested in picking it up. There is still a window of opportunity, though, and perhaps the show will continue at some point.

Can It Be Revived?

Can fans bring Halo: The Series back for Season 3?

There was not much outcry from Halo fans when the show was cancelled, apparently because it had been somewhat divisive in how it handled the source material. But the show did attract a following, and perhaps they can help it return for a third season. The first season of the show became available on Netflix internationally this past March, and that resulted in a brief appearance in the Netflix Top 10. Both seasons will be available internationally and in the States starting in October of this year, and that presents an opportunity to bring the show more attention.

If the fans stage watch parties once Halo is streaming on Netflix, and also get it trending on social media, that could result in it returning to the streaming charts. They could also stage subscription drives to get people to sign up for the service to watch the show, and that should draw the attention of Netflix execs because it impacts the bottom line. (You can find more campaign ideas at this link.) If enough people tune in and subscribe to the service, that could convince the streamer to pick it up for a third season and possibly more, or for another venue to step in and continue the show. But fans need to take this opportunity to act because the availability cast and crew could change at any time.

Where Can You Watch It?

Both seasons are currently streaming on Paramount+, and there is no indication they will be leaving that service anytime soon. As mentioned above, Season 1 and 2 will be available to stream in the States starting in October 2025. Season 1 has been released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k UHD.

  1. I freaking love the Halo series. It’s the game come to life in a way that the animated series never could. I didn’t play video games on any home console until I saw Halo. It’s the only reason that I purchased one. I bought every game as they came out and played the scrap outta all of them. I now have the Master Chief collection and play with my children frequently. I have watched and re-watch the series with them too and we have been awaiting the next season with great anticipation. It would be a terrible shame to not continue with the series. All us Halo fans have spent bucket loads of our hard earned money and shown the game much love. Master Chief fans deserve this, I hope they don’t go cheap on us now.
