Fan-favorite series Chuck managed to last for five seasons despite the ever-present threat of cancellation, and Zachary Levi would still like to continue the show with a movie.
What Is It?
This spy-fi entry follows Chuck Bartowski, a lovable underachiever working at an electronics store who accidentally downloads a database of top-secret government intelligence into his brain. Suddenly thrust into the world of espionage, Chuck must balance his double life as a reluctant spy while relying on his handlers—CIA agent Sarah Walker and NSA agent John Casey—to help him survive high-stakes missions, all while trying to maintain his everyday life with friends and family.
Aired: NBC, 2007-12, 5 Seasons, Totaling 91 Episodes
Starring: Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Joshua Gomez, Sarah Lancaster, Adam Baldwin
Created By: Josh Schwartz
Why Was It Cancelled?
This show debuted in the fall of 2007 as the lead-in to Heroes, which had premiered the year before and become a big hit. Chuck never succeeded in developing a very large audience, but it was also never officially cancelled during its five-year run. It did regularly face the threat of cancellation, though, with fans stepping up to keep it from getting sent to the Network Executioner.
The ratings dropped during Chuck’s second year, and since the numbers weren’t particularly strong to begin with, the writing appeared to be on the wall. But fans responded with a brilliant idea: target the sponsors, focusing primarily on Subway. They went en masse to the sandwich chain to buy food in support of the show, and Zachary Levi even joined a group of fans at a Subway in England.
Fans also took to social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook, to bring attention to the show and their campaign. This was one of the first major attempts to use those platforms for a “Save My Show” effort, and it proved highly effective. Fans also did the old-style letter-writing campaign, and with all of their efforts, NBC would eventually give Chuck the greenlight for a third season.
Ratings for the third year slipped again, but NBC still renewed the show for a fourth season—possibly realizing they would face a raucous fan backlash if they cancelled it. The network later renewed Chuck for a fifth season, which was announced in advance as its last. That got the series to 91 episodes—enough for a syndication run, where shows really turn a profit—and gave it the chance to wrap up its storylines. And it got to that point largely because of the dedication and efforts of its loyal and highly active fanbase.
Can It Be Revived?
In 2013, after Rob Thomas successfully ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund a Veronica Mars movie, Zachary Levi immediately began talking about doing the same with Chuck. It would have been financially doable, as Veronica Mars fans raised over five million dollars, but broadcast rights issues caused conflicts, and the crowdfunding campaign never went forward. Levi has continued to float the idea of a Chuck movie since then, and as recently as 2023 he was pushing the idea with Warner Bros. after his success in the Shazam! movies:
I’m in early talks with heads there to be like, ‘Hey guys, you know, I’m now your, your superhero over your Warner Brothers films. Let me let, let me use that goodwill and let me go make this.’ Cause I think, uh, look, I know all the cast would be in, they’ve already said that totally down to do it. I think Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak, our creators are down, they’re down to write it and you know, bring the band back together. It’s just a matter of Warner Brothers saying, ‘yeah, we’re down and here’s a budget and go make that movie.’ Cuz I listen, Chuck was basically a little mini eighties action movie every week anyway. So it’s not like we don’t know how to do it. We just have a little more budget in time and go make a proper movie. I think it would be so much fun.
Nothing has come of that yet, but perhaps now is the time for fans to rally behind the show once again. The entire series is currently streaming on Prime Video, and if fans start staging watch parties, they could get it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. In addition, purchasing episodes on VOD, DVD, or Blu-ray would directly impact the bottom line and grab the attention of Warner Bros. execs. At this point, one or more movies are the most realistic way to continue the franchise, and they wouldn’t be prohibitively expensive to produce. If fans generate enough buzz, Amazon and Warner Bros. might be convinced to bring it back as a movie—or maybe even a mini-series. With Zachary Levi still championing the idea and most of the other cast members available, now may be the best time to strike.
Where Can You Watch It?
As mentioned, the entire series is streaming on Prime Video and it is also available to purchase VOD there and other sellers like Apple. The entire series is also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
