Streaming Sci Fi TV: Hulu Has Several Sci Fi and Fantasy Originals of Interest

Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.  Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.

Hulu is one of the first streaming services, starting off with a catalog of existing television shows and movies and also offering encore runs of some broadcast network shows the day after they aired. Hulu was also one of the pioneers among streamers with scripted originals, putting out shows like the mockumentary Battleground and the teen drama East Los High before Netflix set its sights on becoming the market leader. Hulu has not been as prolific as Netflix, or even Amazon’s Prime Video, in its output of scripted originals since that time, but the streamer has delivered some notable shows, especially in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.

Its best-known series for genre fans is The Handmaid’s Tale, which wrapped up in 2025 with its sixth season and has a sequel series on the way. Also of note, The Orville warped over to Hulu after the Disney buyout of Fox Entertainment, and allegedly a fourth season is on the way at some point. Other shows of note on the service include the AHS spin-off American Horror Stories (3 seasons so far), the Stephen King–inspired Castle Rock (2 seasons), the sci-fi comedy Future Man (3 seasons), the Marvel entries Runaways (3 seasons), Hit-Monkey (2 seasons so far), and M.O.D.O.K. (1 season), the animated comedies Solar Opposites (6 seasons) and Futurama (3 seasons so far), and Alien: Earth (1 season so far), which is a co-production with FX. Another worth noting is the miniseries Devs from Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina), which often gets overlooked. That one counts as a sci-fi sleeper and is certainly worth checking out.  In addition, Hulu has quite a lot of older sci fi and fantasy shows available, such as the Big Three Joss Whedon entries Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel.

You can subscribe to Hulu for $9.99 per month with ads or $18.99 for the premium plan with no ads, 4K UHD, and download options for some shows and movies. There are also bundles that include Disney+, ESPN+, and/or HBO Max, and you can see the prices for those at this link.
