Cancellation Watch: Ironheart Places in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Resident Alien Showrunner Says a Movie is “Plausible”, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Ironheart (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This MCU entry placed in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere, landing at the Number 6 slot with an estimated 526 million minutes of viewing. Those are decent numbers for a Disney+ series, though this one was designed for a limited run as has become common for that service. There is a chance that the show could return for a second season at some point, but they will have to work that into the very busy MCU schedule.

Resident Alien (USA, Status: Cancelled): Showrunner Chris Sheridon said at Comic Con that a movie continuation of this series is “plausible”, but there is nothing currently in the works. The ratings for its final season remain decent for a low-cost, basic cable series, and if fans continue to stump for the show, perhaps that movie could happen at some point.

The Sandman (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This supernatural series continues to draw good viewership for a Netflix series, placing at Number 4 in that streamer’s Top 10 this past week with 32.6 million hours of viewing across 3.3 million households. But its numbers are down notably from its first season, and I see no indication that Netflix is wavering on the cancellation decision. If fans make enough noise, though, perhaps another venue will take an interest in saving the series.

Nautilus (AMC, Status: Cancelled): This Captain Nemo prequel series slipped to a 0.03 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 380K total viewers this past Sunday. Those numbers are not great for such an expensive series, though it may be making up slack in delayed and digital viewing. Fans should continue to make some noise on the social networks to support the show, and perhaps it could eventually sail into a second season (more on that at this link).
