Netflix Has Renewed Wednesday for a Third Season Ahead of Its Second Season Premiere

Coming as no surprise, Netflix has renewed its dark comedy Wednesday for a third season ahead of its second season premiere. That show–executive produced by Tim Burton–first arrived in November 2022 and set viewership records for the streaming service, with 341 million hours watched during its first week. It has also been well-received by critics and received nine Emmy nominations in 2023 with four wins. The show has experienced delays between seasons due to COVID and the writers’ and actors’ strikes, so the early renewal for a third season should get it moving forward more quickly with less of a hiatus. A spin-off is also in the works, but there are no details on that at this point (though perhaps more info will come out at Comic Con).

Showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar had the following comment about the renewal:

It’s been a dark delight to watch Wednesday cast her spell over audiences across the globe — one deadpan quip at a time. We’re beyond thrilled she’ll be returning to stalk the halls of Nevermore in Season 3. This time, she’ll unearth more of the school’s sinister secrets — and descend even deeper into the Addams family crypt. Or, as Wednesday would say: ‘Nothing brings a family together like a good exhumation.’

The Netflix official renewal statement had the following to say about the upcoming second season which premieres August 6th:

Season 2 will explore darker, more complex stories, while also retaining the show’s signature macabre humor. It will also expand the Addams Family and Nevermore lore, introducing mysterious new characters while bringing back Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Gomez (Luis Guzmán), and Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) in expanded roles.

Since the second season of Wednesday premieres next month, it counts as part of the 2025-26 season and it does not impact the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2024-25 season. We currently stand at 30 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 17 cancelled and ending (27%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Wednesday is a supernatural coming-of-age mystery that follows Wednesday Addams, the iconic daughter of the Addams Family, as she enrolls at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts. While mastering her emerging psychic abilities, she becomes entangled in a series of local murders and uncovers dark secrets about her family’s past. It stars Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, and Christina Ricci.

The 2024-25 season is almost done, but I expect more announcements to come out of Comic Con this weekend. Be sure to stay tuned to CancelledSciFi.com and our social media sites for updates and breaking news.
