Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for Twisted Metal and Eyes of Wakanda, San Diego Comic Con News and Updates, and More

Twisted Metal S2 premieres July 31st on Peacock

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

Twisted Metal (Peacock): Following the revelations in the season one finale, John and Quiet find themselves entering the deadly TWISTED METAL tournament, a sinister demolition derby hosted by a mysterious man known as Calypso. As they try to survive an onslaught of dangerous new foes and familiar faces alike, including the murderous clown Sweet Tooth, things get complicated for John when he reunites with his long-lost sister, the vigilante Dollface. The first three Season 2 eps will be available on Wednesday followed by two per week after that.

Eyes of Wakanda (Disney+): In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes must carry out dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts from the enemies of Wakanda. They are the Hatut Zaraze and this is their story. All episodes will be available for streaming on Friday.

Schedule Notes:

Note that I have seen several different premiere dates for Eyes of Wakanda, including August 27th in the teaser.  But the website is showing August 1st (as of this writing), so I am going with that one.  Netflix’s The Sandman will release the bonus episode “Death: The High Cost of Living” on Thursday and that will be the final episode for the series. Wrapping up this week is Shudder’s Hell Motel which has its finale on Tuesday. That one appears to be a mini-series, and I have seen no indication it will continue to a second season. Below are the full listings for the current week, and you can see all of the premieres for August and beyond at this link. The two-week view of the schedule is available here.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Following is a round up of the sci fi TV news from the past few days, mostly coming out of Comic Con.  This has been updated on Monday, July 28th.

The title for the new sci fi series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has been announced. It goes by the name Pluribus and has the tagline: “Happiness is contagious”. The show premieres on Apple TV+ in November, and not much is know about it, but Gilligan had the following to say about the series:

Pluribus has no crime, and no methamphetamine. The world changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it is quite different. It’s the modern world — the world we live in — but it changes very abruptly. And the consequences that that reaps hopefully provide drama for many, many episodes after that.

Better Call Saul alum Rhea Seehorn stars in the series, and the first season will consist of nine episodes.  You can see the teaser at this link.

A TV series adaptation of the Wolfenstein video games is currently in the works at Amazon’s MGM Studios. Those are set in an alternate history in which World War II is fought with the help of supernatural forces as well as highly advanced technology. The specifics of the series are not known at this point, though they have released the tagline for the show: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen”. Patrick Somerville (Station Eleven) is onboard as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Westworld alums Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham joining as executive producers. A network or streaming service has not been attached yet, but this one will likely be headed to Amazon’s Prime Video.

Rick & Morty will be getting a spin-off series that will focus on President Andre Curtis. Deadline gives the following description for the show:

President Curtis follows the Commander-in-Chief and his eccentric staff as they tackle the kind of crises that Rick Sanchez could never be bothered with, from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.

Keith David will be reprising his role as voice actor for the character, and the show will likely premiere on Adult Swim at some point in 2026.

The long-awaited eighth season of Netflix’s animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince will not be happening, but that property will be getting a spin-off to be titled The Dragon King. Following is the official synopsis:

On the cusp of vanishing into legend, the last of the Archdragons— the young Dragon King, Zym—wields his great power to forge a fragile peace in Xadia. But when a forsaken and forgotten Dragon Prince returns from the shadows of exile, Zym uncovers a truth long buried: the throne he inherited may not have been his to claim. And the true heir has come to take it back.

This will not be happening with Netflix, though, as the creative team from the original series has started a Kickstarter to fund the new show. This has only just been announced, so we will keep an eye on how this project tracks going forward.

The scripted podcast series Star Trek: Kahn will release its first episode on September 8th.  That explores the untold events on Ceti Alpha V, chronicling Khan’s descent from a superhuman visionary into the vengeful villain seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.  You can see the trailer at this link.

Ronald D. Moore has confirmed that things are moving forward on Amazon’s God of War TV series which has been in development hell for sometime:

We’re in the scripts phase. We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into. I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.

Moore took over the project from previous showrunners, and he says that the first season will consist of ten episodes and Amazon has already renewed the show for a second season.  The current plan is to start filmin in 2026 so that it can premiere later that year or early 2027.

The upcoming third season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire will be getting a name change and will be referred to as The Vampire Lestat. That is because it will be based on the second book of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, which goes by that title. Joining the cast are Jennifer Ehle as Gabriella, Christopher Heyerdahl as Marius, Damien Atkins as Magnus, and Ella Ballentine as Baby Jenks. The show is currently set to return at some point in Fall.

In renewals and cancellation this week, USA’s Resident Alien has been cancelled after its fourth season, AMC’s The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has been renewed for a fourth and final season, Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina has been renewed for a fifth and final season, Netflix’s Wednesday has been renewed for a third season.
