Cancellation Watch: Resident Alien and The Librarians: The Next Chapter Improve, The Last of Us Could End with Season 3, and More

Will Resident Alien be cancelled or will it continue to Season 5

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Resident Alien (USA, Status: On the Bubble): This series posted its best numbers of its fourth season with a combined rating of 0.13 based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic and 601K total viewers for its broadcasts on USA and Syfy. I am keeping it On the Bubble for now, but fans should take this as an encouraging sign and should continue to try and make some noise on the social networks to bring as much attention as possible to the series.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter (TNT, Status: Renewed): This series improved to its highest rating yet in its first season this past Monday, pulling in a 0.07 score in the demo with 334K total viewers. It continues to pull decent numbers for a basic cable entry and appears to have justified the network’s decision to renew the show for a second season in advance of its premiere.

The Last of Us (HBO, Status: Renewed): According to HBO boss Casey Bloys, the third season of this show will arrive in 2027, and that could be its last:

The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.

Showrunner Craig Mazin had originally said that two more seasons were planned, but considering the expense of the show and the fact that the ratings slipped in its second year, it is possible that The Last of Us will wrap up after its third year.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+, Status: Renewed): This show has been renewed through its fifth season and that has been announced as its last. But according to co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, it could have gone on longer:

That was the studio’s choice. We would’ve gone on forever. But what was great was, they gave us an opportunity — I think the [studio’s] instinct was actually to end after [season] four. […] We said, ‘We got to get us up to TOS. We’ve got to reach TOS to fulfill the promise to the fans, which was ‘What happens to all these people? How do they start to become those characters we know, and what happens to the ones we don’t see in canon?

Obviously Strange New Worlds could not have gone on forever because there is a point that it runs up against the original series (even though it has already rewritten some of that canon), but this does suggest that there may be a desire to wind down the Star Trek franchise at Paramount, especially with the Skydance merger looming.
