Coming as no surprise, AMC has given a third season renewal to its TWD spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City. That show wrapped up its second season this past month, and the third season showed up in the Production Weekly listings a few weeks ago, so we already had a spoiler on the renewal. A fourth season of Daryl Dixon has also appeared on that list, but the network has not made an official announcement on that yet (the third season of that show is set to premiere in September). The linear ratings for Dead City were down in its second year, but I figured that it would still get a least a third season as AMC would not want to outright cancel a high-profile continuation of its big franchise. Following is the official description for the upcoming season:
Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?
I had thought that the third season might be announced as the show’s last, but it seems like they are doing some notable world-building and could have plans for it to continue.
Showrunner Eli Jorné–who created the series–will be stepping down, and frequent writer Seth Hoffman will be taking over those duties. AMC president of entertainment Dan McDermott had the following to say about the behind-the-scenes changes:
We’re thankful to Eli Jorné for two seasons of ‘Dead City’ that took the story of these iconic characters in exciting new directions and broadened this thriving Universe by introducing a new corner of the walker apocalypse. As we continue to create new stories for a passionate TWD fanbase, we’re delighted to have a seasoned Walking Dead veteran like Seth Hoffman at the helm of a new season, alongside the remarkable Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that will bring new adversaries and alliances and push the boundaries of Maggie and Negan’s conflicted relationship.
The third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City will likely premiere mid-to-late 2026.
This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal score for the current season to 30 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (48% of shows tracked) vs. 17 cancelled and ending (27%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.
In The Walking Dead: Dead City, Maggie’s son Herschel is kidnapped and she enlists the help of Negan to rescue him, which takes them to the zombie-infested city of Manhattan. It stars Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zeljko Ivanek, Gaius Charles, and Mahina Napoleon.
The 2024-25 season is almost done, but I expect more announcements are on the way as the streaming services and networks get their schedules set for next year. Be sure to stay tuned to CancelledSciFi.com and our social media sites for updates and breaking news.
