Sci Fi TV Highlights: Series Finale for The Handmaid’s Tale, Season Finale for Doctor Who, and More

The Handmaid's Tale is coming to an end with its Season 6 finale.

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Schedule Notes:

The Librarians: The Next Chapter has its “timeslot debut” on Monday, but TNT is doing the show no favors. Its regular timeslot will be Mondays at 9 PM EST, but that is delayed this week for the Stanley Cup Finals just like the Sunday premiere is delayed for NBA Playoffs. The show might draw in some extra viewers as bleed-over from the games, but non-sports fans may not want to wait until 11:30 PM EST to watch the show and will likely just record it (which does not count in the overnight ratings). Beginning next week, the show should start following a more regular schedule, but don’t be surprised if there are further preemptions for sports. Note that the premiere will get an encore run at 4:30 PM EST Monday and the second episode will get an encore run at the same time next Monday. It will also be available for streaming on TNT’s app. Wrapping up this week is Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale which will have its series finale on Tuesday. A sequel series–The Testaments–is currently in the works at that streaming service. On Saturday, Doctor Who wraps up its current season on Disney+ and the BBC. The renewal status of that show is currently uncertain (see the News section below). Below are the full listings for the current week, and you can see all of the premieres for June and beyond at this link. The two-week view of the schedule is available here.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Will Doctor Who be going on hiatus?

Doctor Who showrunner Russel T. Davies has indicated that the upcoming two-part finale to the current season–which will consist of the episodes “Wish World” and “The Reality War”–will “shake up” the lore of Gallifrey. Following is what he told Doctor Who Magazine:

It takes some very unexpected turns… There are big surprises, from the Doctor and for the Doctor. Some of it shakes up the lore of Gallifrey. Some of it re-contextualises the Doctor, the Rani, and their relationship.

That show’s future is uncertain at this time with the Disney deal currently unrenewed and viewership down from previous seasons. It could be heading into a hiatus, but seeing as it is the longest-running sci fi TV series of all time, don’t count it out yet.

The Wheel of Time has been cancelled by Amazon despite the fact that it is still drawing strong viewership. It is likely that the cost of the series was an issue, but the news still comes as a surprise. I expect that fans will rally to save the show, but it may be difficult to interest another venue in the current cost-conscious environment. More on that at this link.

Production has begun on the fourth season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon even though that show has not been officially renewed.  Also on the latest Production Weekly list are Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, and Supacell Season 2 and you can read about those at this link.
