Why Was Evil Cancelled and Can It Be Saved? (Updated)

Evil has come to an end after four seasons, but there were plans to keep it going and it has received a boost from streaming on Netflix and from the master of horror Stephen King.

What Is It?

This supernatural drama follows forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, who is recruited by David Acosta, a Catholic priest-in-training, to investigate unexplained phenomena, including alleged miracles, demonic possessions, and hauntings. Alongside them is Ben Shakir, a skeptical tech expert who seeks scientific explanations for the bizarre cases they encounter. As the team delves deeper into these mysteries, they confront the blurred lines between science, religion, and the supernatural, often facing sinister forces that test their beliefs and sanity.

Aired: CBS/Paramount+, 2019-24, 4 Seasons Totaling 50 Episodes

Starring: Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Kurt Fuller, Michael Emerson

Created By: Robert King, Michelle King

Why Was It Cancelled?

This series debuted on CBS during the 2019-20 season and pulled in modest ratings for a show airing on that network at that time. CBS did give it a second-season renewal but later shifted it over to its streaming service Paramount+ (known as CBS All Access at that time). That move was likely a good one, though, seeing as the supernatural drama did not fit well with the standard procedurals and sitcoms that dominated the linear network’s lineup.

Evil performed relatively well for a Paramount+ original and was renewed each year up to its fourth season. Then in February of 2024, the streamer announced that the show’s upcoming fourth year would be its last and that it would get four additional episodes to wrap up its storylines. That gave it four seasons and 50 episodes total which is actually a decent run for a streaming original these days. However, co-creator Robert King did share the plans in the works for a fifth season in an interview with TV Insider:

We were going to do more with court and the court system and how demonic it can be. There were going to be more demons kind of infecting the courthouse and Kristen was going to have to be much more involved. All three would have to testify. We were trying to satirize the work we did in Good Wife and Good Fight. So we were even going to pull in—we did bring in Richard Kind—a lot more of the actors from Good Wife and Good Fight and kind of show, hopefully in a very meta way, self-reflecting of—a lot of the buildup of those shows was how justice can go wrong. But in the world where there is evil, how much of it going wrong is in the human makeup or in the demonic makeup of the show?

Despite that, King indicated at the time of the cancellation announcement that there were no plans to shop the property to a different venue and that the focus was on wrapping up the story with the final four episodes. By all appearances, it seemed that Evil would come to an end with its extended fourth season, and I did not see much in the way of fan activity to get the show moved to a different platform.

But then in August 2024, famed horror writer Stephen King started stumping for the series, and it seemed to gain some new life. On August 27th, series star Katja Herbers shared a video on Twitter with King praising the show and she included the comment: “OKAY CAN WE DO THE PICK UP NOW? 😝 thank you
@StephenKing #Evil”

And then on August 31st, King put up the following post:

This, along with the fact that Evil has spent multiple weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, seemed to have given the show a boost, but nothing has come of that yet.

Can It Be Saved?

The cancellation of Evil came as somewhat of a surprise, but then four seasons is typically the capping-off point for a streaming original because they are usually not bringing in many new subscriptions by that point. This one could be a different story, though, because the first two seasons became available on Netflix in April 2024 and the show returned to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for over a dozen weeks. Then in January 2025, the third and fourth seasons became available on Netflix and the show made it into the Nielsen rankings once again. While Evil did wrap up its main storylines, it also ended with the suggestion that more evil is lurking out there for the team to track down, so a continuation is possible.  Robert King put a bit of a damper on that, though, in a conversation with Screen Rant:

And I’m disappointed because they found it too late. Why can’t we back up history about a year? Because a lot of the fans came are probably a little too late to save the show.

However, he did qualify that with the statements: “Although never say never, who knows?” and “anything could come out of this”.  Now, with the show back in the Nielsen rankings, perhaps Paramount+ would consider greenlighting a fifth season, or maybe Netflix would be interested in carrying it on like they did with Manifest and Lucifer. So fans should definitely take action now before the principal cast and crew get caught up with other projects.

Watch parties on both Netflix and Paramount+ would be a good first step, and fans should also get the show trending on the social networks to bring it more attention. Subscription drives to either of those services would help as well as that impacts the bottom line.  And fans should definitely engage Stephen King to get his help with promoting their efforts (you can find more suggestions for possible fan efforts at this link). Evil is continuing to draw strong viewership, and right now is certainly the time to push the executives at Paramount+ and Netflix to consider keeping it around for a fifth season and possibly more. With a big name backing fan efforts and with very good viewership already, this supernatural drama may not be done just yet.

Where Can You Watch It?

As mentioned above, the first two seasons of the show are currently streaming on Netflix, and the entire series is available on Paramount+. The first three seasons have been released on Blu-ray, and the fourth will likely be available by early 2025.  The show is also available to purchase VOD.

  1. Over many years I have loved watching many shows getting totally hooked then they get cancelled. Purchasing the seasons on blu ray and now 4k as DVD is crap. Deadwood Firefly Longmire Legion Perry Mason Raised by Wolves The Nevers Briarpatch spring to mind. The suits at these companies only care about making money they have no creative soul and should never be employed in any creative process but the capatilsit world does not work on idealism.
The latest show which I missed as I dont stream is the four seasons of Evil by the team who brought the superb The Good Wife and The Good Fight both of those I binged watched over the last few months. Evil is a magnificent show of horror black humour with great casting sadly now ended..
Every new show is a gamble if it lasts and the ones who have double figure seasons and offshoots tend to be those cliche bland cop shows like CSI etc.

  2. I only discovered EVIL just over a week ago, and enjoyed it that much I binged the whole of it. Perhaps it needed a bigger Platform and or better advertising as here in the UK I stumbled upon it while channel hopping for something to watch. I would love a season 5. PS Beautiful lady Katja and the co stars all seemed to genuinely get along.

  3. Why is it every time a series gets good they end it. I really need more of the series. It seems like the bad ones. They keep making them the ones that everyone wants to watch. They stop making them if you’ve got an up tech in Netflix people watching it must mean that we want to see it, especially if we’re watching it all the way to the end Please consider making more of the series

  4. The finale left too many loose ends. What happened to the psychologists daughter who was taking on demon traits? What about the demon like twinkle in the baby’s eyes at the end? I and many of my friends, were addicted to this show. I am upset that there really wasn’t a completion to the tale.

    1. Bring it back! I just finished it and there are so many unanswered questions!!!! This was refreshing in its originality and I really cared about the characters! Don’t leave us hanging….

  5. It is one of my favorite shows and I keep up with articles about a resurgence of a fifth season. I will watch it over and over again if it helps to get the attention it deserves. They created a whole new genre in the universe of horror and fantasy. It’s witty and the script writing is phenomenal. Ever actor and story line is so well thought out and it deserves to continue the story of Evil.

  6. I would love to see Evil have a reboot to the series. One of the best shows in the last 10 years! Bring it back!!!

  7. I would definitely love to see more seasons of Evil. I loved all the characters and the main 3 would need to get back together since their interactions are what make the show so interesting. The characters are complex and they play so well against each other. It is sharp and funny and has just enough horror plots for those of us who love a little adrenaline rush with our viewing. Pleas bring it back!!

  8. My only problem with this show – and maybe I’m missing something because I haven’t finished yet – is how the main character, who i want to like, seems to flirt with infidelity like it’s no big deal. I get she likes David, but at the end of the day, she’s got a husband who loves her. Sure, he’s gone a lot. But as a person who happens to work a job that keeps me away for substantial periods of time…I mean, it’s kind of distressing to see a show that seems to legitimize cheating just because the guy has a job that requires him to be away from home for long periods of time. It cheapens David, as a character, when he flirts with Kirsten or Kristen, or whatever her name is.

You know, they very along amazingly, but she already chose to be with someone. He might not be perfect, but the grass is always greener is on the other side and also, you already promised someone else that you love them. If you think it’s okay to be like, “oh this person is better for me. I just met them after I met this other person, so it’s cool I’m just gonna change my mind. ” … that’s trash. Eat your medicine and become a better person. It’s different if it’s an abusive relationship, that’s not the case here. I love this show. But it’s very upsetting how they blow off the husband and try to make the sexual tension between Kristen and David out to be “ok.” It’s not.

  9. Yeah, this is a great show. It pisses me off when they cancel a good show. It takes time to discover things. You have to dig through piles of trash to find good content. Then, when you finally find it, you realize they canceled the show after x seasons and you don’t bother with it at all because why would you. By the time you are invested, the show is over.

  10. Please bring Evil back to Paramount+!!! The cast was amazing and we want more David and Kristen! Not to mention Sister Andrea could have her own spin-off! The writers kept upping their game each season with new demons, but honestly viewers would be tickled to see George pee in the corner of the bedroom again. Missing the entire cast 🙁

  11. Evol was my favorite program and I emailed Paramount+ and said that if they canceled Evil, I would cancel my Paramount+ account. I canceled my Paramount+ account.

    1. I have watched until Season 2 Episode 11 and I have some issues I would like resolved:

      1. I am not a fan if the ending of an episode without an explanation. (Still upset about the wife turning into a pillar of salt and end)

      2. I am a fan of sci-fi; however, you are seriously skating imperiously close to “jumping the shark”. I implore you to come away from the edge. I understand the lure of sensationalism, your fans would appreciate more intellectual capital.

      3. Do not insult your fans by hand feeding them what is going to happen. (Kristen’s egg gets implanted into her own Mother Sheryl)

The reason The Sixth Sense was such an iconic movie is because it was well acted, had an intelligent, interesting, yet surprising script and it was heartfelt, whilst being able to be inclusive to the masses.

  12. Please continue the show Evil. Great cast and very interesting. One of my favorites for sure. Katja, Mike and Aasif are really good together. Always been a big fan of Michael Emerson as well.

  13. Please please please bring back Evil and its original crew! There are so many ways which the show could go. Canceling the show was a grave mistake. No pun intended lol. JUST BRING IT BACK!!!

  14. At this time in our world, real evil is very apparent all around us. It is very disappointing that a wisely written series like this is ended. It’s ending is evil.

  15. Please Let Stephen King Take Over Writing the Script for Netflix and Have Seasons 5, 6, 7 ,8,9 & 10!! Make the Fans of EVIL Happy!

  16. Evil is one of my favorite shows, I was very surprised that series was not renewed. I really am going to miss it.

  17. Evil was a binge watch for me. There is so much more that was planned for the story and I, and I’m sure millions of others, would love to see it. I only started watching a few months ago. I’m sure there is a larger audience that will dive in if they become aware of it. Late adopters like me spread the word. Bring it back!!!

  18. Evil was one of the best shows on all of TV. I subscribed to Paramount+ because of it. Bring it back! My family and I have watched the whole series three times. We need new Evil!

  19. I just binged watched ALL 4 SEASONS in a week!! I loved it!! Bring it back!! There’s nothing good on TV anymore!!

  20. Evil is one of my favorite shows if not my favorite show. I couldn’t wait for the next episode to come out. Then when it went off air on CBS, I Googled & found it it was on Paramount + so I subscribed. Now they cancelled it again?!? THAT F$@&#*G SUCKS!!! That was the only reason I subscribed. So I guess its time to end it. Thanks a lot Paramount!

  21. Evil is a good show. Would love to see more seasons of this show. You can not leave the fans went the ending we were left with. The show left with so many unanswered questions. Please bring it back. If for any reason to answer questions, finish and end what they started.

    1. What makes all of this ridiculous is NETFLIX saved MANIFEST which was really not good. There are no shows like EVIL on the air. Much like The Good Wife and The Good Fight EVIL has the same fun with serious subjects that can be seen as ridiculous. There’s drama and scares and moments of incredulity. It’s a great show. Incredibly well written, filmed and of course acted. The best thing is just when you think they will go all corny and hokey on you they make it all seem plausible. The last season the Kings messed with its audience in its opening credits….it was BRILLIANT. What I also find incredibly unsettling is HOW their other show Elsbeth is still on the air. It’s complete fluff compared to their other shows and just not my taste. Elsbeth, as a character, was great on The Good Wife and The Good Fight but she works only in small doses. A whole show, for me, is too much. The novelty of Elsbeth lost its luster for me 🤷🏼‍♂️ but it makes absolutely NO SENSE that EVIL which is a far better show was cancelled and now sits in limbo waiting for someone to SMARTLY pick it up. The show went through SAG strike and COVID. These days we have to wait for a new season for well over a year with some shows. EVIL went through ALL of this and it’s still high in the ratings? How much more proof do they need to get it picked up? They can’t be that daft. Can they?

  22. Please please continue EVIL! My entire house hold absolutely loves it!! And I’ve introduced all of my friends to it, as well! You immediately fall in love with the shows characters and the writing is fresh and original! Absolutely no red-shirts in this series! (and the writers actually give us the benefit of the doubt!) The acting is superb- Kristen, Ben, David, The Monsignor(RIP), Sheryl, Kristens daughters, Andy, Leland, Grace… They are all EXCELLENT!!!!🧗‍♀️ And they’re all so unique, yet so many characters are super funny! Especially Kristen! I am such a fan of the show EVIL!
    🛐⛪️💊⚕️⛏️👹👣💉⚰️⚛️🧬🕷🧟🔦🦇⚖️🎱☯️
I definitely vote for a 5th season and any others that Robert & Michelle want to create for us- as long as David, Kristen, and Ben are in it! Fingers crossed it’s approved!!!🤞🙏♥️

  23. Evil is such a smart and entertaining show. One of the best, most creative, and intriguing series made in the last decade. Keep this show going!
