Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Netflix had previously announced plans for a sequel to the Star Trek-inspired episode “USS Callister”, and now we have confirmation that will be arriving in the upcoming seventh season. Netflix UK released a sizzle real (though it has since been deleted) showing a brief clip of the new ep. The specifics are not available yet, but Charlie Booker did have this to say:
This has been brewing for actually quite a long time. And it’s partly because of the way that it ends. The first one ends like you could just carry that story on and follow where they go now.
This will be the first sequel episode on Black Mirror, and there were talks at one point of spinning “USS Callister” off into its own show. Season 7 will be premiering later this year.
Netflix announced this past week that the upcoming second season of its supernatural drama The Sandman will be its last. That show drew high viewership, but it is very expensive to produce and Neil Gaiman is currently facing sexual misconduct accusations, so either or both could have led to the cancellation. More on that at this link.
Officially starting production are the Good Omens finale and the new fantasy series Rise of the Empress, both of which are from Amazon (you can read more about those at this link). In additional production news, filming has wrapped on the second season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians which should have it on track to premiere later this year.
