MGM+ has given the greenlight to a limited-series adaptation of of the sci fi novel Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. Deadline gives the following description for the project:

When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.

Ish is a brilliant but solitary young geologist living a semi-isolated life who awakens from a coma only to find that there is no one left alive but him. A plague of unprecedented virulence has swept the globe, and yes, there are a few scattered survivors, but there are no rules.

Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, The Hunger Games) has been cast in the role of Ish, and filming will start in April with a targeted premiere date of late 2024.

Amazon MGM Studios is adapting several popular podcasts including The Prophecy and Daniel X: Genesis.  The former is a a supernatural thriller and the latter follows a teenager who learns he has special abilities.  Both will be adapted into one-hour live-action dramas.

In production news, Ben Stiller has said that filming on the long-delayed second season of Severance could wrap up next month and that “it will be coming out sometime after that soon”.

  1. Earth Abides, eh? I’m not sure what it is that’s driving this obsession with Post-Apocalyptic and Zombie scenarios these past 15 or so years….I wish there was more positive science fiction with upstanding ethical moral characters. Between Game of Thrones, Walking Dead and all the rest of this misery porn being so popular has me wondering about people in general.

  2. “Resident Alien” is a bit of a curious one at this point. The viewership did drop off in the second half of Season 2, but the first two seasons have found quite a bit of viewership on Netflix since they released it there, drawing people to the series. I feel like it’s something of a toss-up at this point.

    1. I do think that the Netflix viewership is helping the show. If not for that, I would have it On the Bubble

      1. I can attest to that – I only recently started watching this show having vowed never to watch the sci-fi channel again after the cancellation of Dark Matter.

      1. The fact that season 2 is premiering about 4ish months after the end of season 1 also seems pretty strange.

        1. Season 2 was already completed at the time that Season 1 premiered. It was originally supposed to run as a Spectrum original and on AMC, but they dropped it. MGM+ picked up the two completed seasons but has not committed to anything beyond that as far as I have heard.

          1. Got it – even more reason to suspect this might be a burn-off run. Too bad. It’s not a great show but at least it’s space-based and seems to have the potential for some actually interesting scifi stories.
