Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:
3 Body Problem (Netflix): A fateful decision in 1960s China echoes across space and time to a group of scientists in the present, forcing them to face humanity’s greatest threat.
X-Men 97 (Disney+): Carrying on where X-Men: The Animated series left off in 1997, this show continues to follow the team that Charles Xavier created as they struggle to find their place in a world that fears mutants.
Schedule Notes:
Wrapping up this week is Paramount+’s Halo which has its second season finale on Thursday. There has been no word on a third season of that show, but strong viewership numbers suggest it will be back. [Update] The first six episodes of Ark: The Animated Series were released on Thursday with no advance notice. The remaining episodes will arrive later this year. Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Netflix has announced a 2025 release window for the seventh season of Black Mirror and confirmed that one episode will return to the U.S.S. Callister. Netflix offered the following logline for the installment: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning”. The Season 4 episode which offered a Star Trek homage/parody has proven popular, and the streamer previously announced that a limited series is also in the works. The upcoming Season 7 episode may lead into that.
The dystopian series Snowpiercer is back on track to airing its fourth and final season as the show has been picked up by AMC. The fourth season has been completed and was supposed to air on TNT back in 2023, but that network has backed away from scripted programming. AMC has acquired the property and will have the first three season available for streaming on AMC+ later this year with the fourth arriving on the network’s linear and digital arms in 2025.
X-Men 97 has its debut on Disney+ this Wednesday, but series creator Beau DeMayo may not be celebrating the premiere because he has been fired from the show. He acted as head writer for the series, including the planned second season, but we will not be involved going forward. There is no word at this point on why DeMayo was let go.
In renewal news, CBS has given the greenlight to a fourth season of its supernatural comedy Ghosts. That should have its premiere in Fall 2024.
In reboot news, there are rumors circulating that Christopher Nolan’s next project will be a revival of the classic 1967 series The Prisoner. Nothing has been confirmed at this point, and that would likely be headed to the big screen if it happens.
