Snowpiercer Is Back on Track and Headed to AMC for Its Final Season

The dystopian series Snowpiercer, which previously aired on TNT, has a new home for its fourth and final season as it will be heading to AMC. That show premiered on TNT in 2020 and aired its first three seasons on that network while pulling decent viewership for a basic cable series. It was renewed through its fourth season and that was announced as its last in June 2022. But as Warner Bros. and Discovery began the process of merging, the decision was made to drop scripted programming from TNT as well as its sister channel TBS. It was then announced in January 2023 that the fourth season would not be airing on TNT even though it had been mostly completed. At that point, Tomorrow Studios bought back the rights to the series and started shopping it around. There had been no word on the show’s fate for the rest of 2023, even though it should have drawn interest as one of the few scripted shows available after the writers and actors strikes left the networks and streaming services with a dearth of programming. But now AMC has stepped up and acquired the property. (That network also picked up the Nautilus series that Disney+ cancelled before it aired.)

AMC executive VP of original programming Ben Davis had the following to say about the series:

Snowpiercer is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride with a loyal fanbase — similar to the passionate fandoms we serve across our biggest franchise series — and a welcome addition to AMC and AMC+. We look forward to giving viewers an opportunity to binge the first three seasons later this year, in anticipation of the arrival of a remarkable fourth season helmed by Paul Zbyszewski and this stellar cast.

The first three seasons of the show will be available for streaming on AMC+ later this year (a premiere date has not been announced yet), and the fourth season will arrive on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025. The delay in it premiering on the AMC networks may be because TNT still holds the airing rights to the series, even though they don’t currently have it available to watch from what I can see. There had been talks of a prequel and sequel series, but there was no mention of those in the announcement by AMC. If the show performs well for the network, though, perhaps those will still go forward.

This show counted all the way back for the 2021-22 season for its third year and it will not return to the schedule until the 2024-25 season, so it does not impact the current Cancellation/Renewal Score. That stands at 20 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (42% of shows tracked) vs. 9 cancelled and ending (19%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Snowpiercer takes place in an apocalyptic future where the world has turned into a frozen wasteland due to ecological disasters. A massive train travels across the globe, but its 1,001 carriages are rigidly separated by class and that leads to growing friction among those onboard that could bring an end to it mission of saving humanity. It stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Alison Wright, Iddo Goldberg, and Sean Bean and it is based on the Bong Joon-ho film of the same name.

We are more than halfway through the season and there are plenty more renewal and cancellation announcements on the way. You can see the status of all this season’s shows at this link. And be sure to follow this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news.
