Cancellation Watch: Upload and Scavengers Reign Fail to Chart But Could Still Continue

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Upload (Prime Video, Completed Season, Renewal Possible): This sci fi comedy has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the two weeks following its Season 3 premiere, but showrunner Greg Daniels is optimistic about the prospects of a fourth season. According to him, Upload is the “number one most-viewed half-hour show on Prime Video” and he plans to start working on Season 4 soon. Of course, some support from the fans for the show on the social networks could help to nudge Amazon execs in the direction of a renewal nod.

Scavengers Reign (Max, Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This animated sci fi series did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its premiere week, but it has been getting very high marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 100% Fresh Rating and 96% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the first season did tell a complete story, executive producers Sean Buckelew and James Merrill have indicated that they have mapped out two more seasons for the show. There has been no renewal announcement yet, and Max execs will be watching the viewership stats, so fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring this one some more attention.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix, Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This show made it into the Netflix Top 10 the week after its premiere, charting at the Number 7 slot with 7.4 million hours viewed across two million households. But according to creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, they consider the first season to be one-and-done and currently have no ideas for a second year of the show. They have not completely ruled that out, though, and if the show remains in the Top 10 for a few weeks then perhaps Netflix will give it the greenlight for a second season.

American Horror Stories (Hulu, Completed 3rd Season, Renewal Possible): The third season of this AHS spin-off charted in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings the week of its premiere, placing at Number 9 with an estimated 327 million minutes of viewing. It has not been renewed for a fourth season yet, but it could stick around for a few more years as a companion to the parent show.
