Harley Quinn Has Been Renewed for a Fifth Season by Max

Warner Bros. Discovery put out a press release today confirming that its animated series Harley Quinn will be continuing to a fifth season on Max. The news is certainly welcome to fans of the shows, but the renewal does come as somewhat of a surprise. The DC Universe is going through a reboot with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, and Harley Quinn does not fit into the new continuum. Other DC shows Titans and Doom Patrol both ended after their fourth seasons because they are part of a prior iteration of the DC Universe. But the animated series Harley Quinn exists in its own world, and a Kite-Man spin-off to be titled Kite Man: Hell Yeah! is in the works, so apparently it will be allowed to carry on. The show will also be going past the three-to-four-season threshold that we typically see from streaming originals. Harley Quinn proved popular for the DCU streaming service where it got its start and has also performed well since moving to Max, though it has yet to register in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. But the streamer does consider it successful enough to keep around through at least a fifth season.

This renewal counts back to the 2022-23 season since the show’s fourth year premiered in July. That brings the tally to 40 renewed sci fi and fantasy shows (45% of shows tracked) vs. 43 cancelled and ending (48%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Harley Quinn follows the titular character after she breaks up with the Joker and goes out to find her own place in criminal underworld of Gotham City. The voice cast includes Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, and Jason Alexander.
