Sci Fi TV News

The Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is set to return in Summer 2024 and the spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will start shooting in 2024, but beyond that no other shows in that universe are actively in the works. Several have been mentioned as being in development like a series that will focus on Jon Snow, but nothing has received the greenlight to series and it could be a while before that happens according to HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys. I had predicted this previously as the networks and streamers are going through cost-cutting and these shows are expensive to produce. I do expect more GoT spin-offs will happen at some point, but likely not as many as has been previously announced.

Marvel Studios has announced the Marvel Spotlight banner for some of its upcoming shows that are not heavily tied to the MCU universe. Marvel’s head of streaming Brad Winderbaum made the following comments in an interview about this approach:

Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.

Echo is the first show to release under this banner and it is set to premiere January 10th.

Dead Boy Detectives will be moving to Netflix after initially receiving the greenlight from Max. It was decided that the show did not fit in with the reboot of the DCEU by James Gunn and Peter Safran and it is tied to the universe of The Sandman, so it went through a shift in streamers. You can see the trailer below.

In scheduling news, the second season of Disney+’s What if . . . ? will premiere by the end of 2023, likely in December.
