Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for For All Mankind S4 and Beacon 23, A Poltergeist Series Is in the Works, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

For All Mankind (Apple TV+): Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since Season 3, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards. Season 4 premieres on Friday.

Beacon 23 (MGM+): This series follows two people — Headey’s Aster and James’ Halan — whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe. Headey’s Aster mysteriously finds her way to a lonely beacon keeper, on his lighthouse in the darkest recesses of space. A tense battle of wills unfolds as James’ keeper begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe as her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent. Premieres on Sunday.

Schedule Notes:

Three shows will be wrapping up this week. On Thursday, Doom Patrol will drop its series finale on Max. Over on Disney+, Loki will have its Season 2 finale, and the expectation is that the show will continue to a third season. Then on Friday, Amazon’s Upload will have its third season finale. Sci Fi TV News

A Poltergeist TV series is in the works at Amazon’s MGM Studios which will be set within the world of the 1982 film. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are attached as executive producers but there are no further details about the series. A previous television version, Poltergeist: The Legacy, premiered on Showtime in 1996, though that had very little connection to the original film. It ran for three seasons on that premium cable service then moved to The Sci Fi Channel for its final season.

In renewals and cancellations, Hulu announced that its revival of Futurama will continue through at least a fourteenth season. The CW has announced that the upcoming fourth season of Superman & Lois will be its last.

In scheduling news for HBO, that premium cable service has indicated that the second season of House of the Dragon is on target for a Summer 2024 release. In addition, the Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to start shooting in Spring of 2024. As for The Last of Us, the second season of that show will likely not arrive until 2025.  And the Dune spin-off series from the recent movie has been renamed from Dune: Sisterhood to Dune: Prophecy with a tentative release window of Fall 2024.

  1. Regarding Beacon 23: Original author Hugh Howey confirmed on a Reddit AMA for Silo in July, that 2 seasons of Beacon have been filmed. He said 2nd season was in post production. Now, the 2 season order was placed by Spectrum & AMC. MGM acquired the show after whatever happened to cause those 2 to drop it. I expect 2 seasons to be all we get of this show unless it is a huge ratings success for MGM+.

  2. Excited for another time jump on For All Mankind. Also, a lot going on with Doctor Who. Next season will be another Season 1 and it’s going to Disney+ worldwide. Meanwhile, the BBC launched Whoniverse platform with a legacy Doctor miniseries, which is is supposedly the first of a series of spin offs, not going to Disney+. Interesting stuff to keep an eye at.
