Cancellation Watch: Futurama and Good Omens Enter the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Snowpiercer Remains in Limbo, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Futurama (Hulu, Streaming 11th Season, Renewal Possible): This show entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its eleventh season premiere at Number 4, pulling in an estimated 506 million minutes of viewing. Hulu does not see many of its originals place in the Top 10, so that counts as a win for the service. The eleventh season of the show will consist of twenty episodes with the second batch of ten eps releasing at some point in 2024. There have already been talks of a potential twelfth season, and if the show continues to perform well on the charts that could happen.

Good Omens (Prime Video, Streaming 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): The second season of this fantasy comedy series from Neil Gaiman entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at Number 6 the week of its premiere and pulled in an estimated 445 million minutes of viewing. This was originally intended as a mini-series, but Gaiman had plans to continue the story and Amazon gave the greenlight for a second season. He also has ideas for where it could go in a third year, and the early viewing numbers are promising at this point.

Snowpiercer (TBD, 4th Season Pending, Ending): The fourth season of this show was announced as its last, and that has been filmed and is ready to air. But TNT booted the show from its schedule and Tomorrow Studios has since been shopping it around to other venues. With an upcoming dearth of scripted programming due to the strikes, it seems like there should be an interest in this show seeing as it can fill in some gaps in the scheduling. But fans should continue to make some noise to support it to ensure that the fourth season finally sees the light of day.  And there is even the possibility that a prequel or sequel series could follow.

Nancy Drew (CW, Completed 4th Season, Cancelled): This show just wrapped up its fourth and final season on The CW, and apparently the creative team was not given much notice that it was ending. Executive producer Larry Teng claims that they only found out late in the production of the fourth season and had to scramble to wrap up as many storylines as possible. I previously had this show’s status as Ending but will be moving that to Cancelled seeing as the new owners of The CW apparently kicked it to the curb without much notice.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Disney+ has decided not to go forward with the Captain Nemo origin series Nautilus or the live-action adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles even though the first season of both shows has been completed (more on that at this link). Both of those will count toward the 2023-24 season, though, which I have not tallied yet. The score for the 2022-23 season currently stands at 41 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy shows (47% of shows tracked) vs. 39 renewed (45%). Below are the season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 87
Cancelled 22 25.3%
Ending 19 21.8% 47.1%
Renewed 39 44.8%
On the Bubble 3 3.4%
Renewal Possible 4 4.6%
Mini-Series 3
