Status Updates: Superman & Lois, Gotham Knights, Little Demon, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, and recently cancelled/ended shows from the current season at our Cancellation Watch Page.  And for those that are in trouble, fans can visit our Call to Action page for suggestions on how to show their support.

Superman & Lois (CW)

(Airing 3rd Season, On the Bubble): The CW has announced its schedule for Fall 2023 but has not given an update on this show or Gotham Knights yet (more on the latter below), though the network’s boss claims a decision will be made soon. Superman & Lois is one of the top-rated CW shows, but it is also expensive to produce which does not fit with the network’s move into lower-cost productions. James Gunn and Peter Safran previously said that they expect the show to continue for one or two more seasons, so it is possible that it could make the shift to HBO Max (soon to be just Max). The third season is set to end on a cliffhanger, so fans will certainly hope that it does not get cut short at that point.

Gotham Knights (CW)

(Airing 1st Season, On the Bubble): As with Superman & Lois (see above), no announcement has been made on this show, but that is expected to come soon.  This one appeared to be DOA before it premiered because it was a first-year show with no track record that was a holdover from the prior regime.  But it has performed well in viewership which gives it s chance to stick around for a second season.  S&L appeared to be the odds-on favorite for renewal among The CW’s genre entries, but Gotham Knights is a less expensive production and fits into the network’s low-cost model.  Nothing is certain at this point, but it now looks like the renewal chances might be shifting in favor of this one.

Little Demon (FXX)

(Completed 1st Season, Cancelled): There has been no announcement on this animated supernatural comedy–including at the Disney Upfront this week–and I am going to assume at this point that it is cancelled. The show pulled decent viewership for a basic cable entry and it had some star power backing it with Danny DeVito and Aubrey Plaza attached, but apparently there is no desire to keep it going for a second season. It is also one of several shows getting purged from Disney+/Hulu this month, which appears to confirm that the Mouse House has no future plans for it.

Evil (Paramount+)

(Renewed, Returning for 4th Season):  This supernatural drama has wrapped up its fourth season early because one cast member had to take a leave from the production due to a personal family matter and also because of set disruptions from the writers’ strike.  Ten episodes had been planned and it is unclear if all of those were completed.  It will at least have episodes to stream this year, but may not be able to wrap up all its storylines.  There is no word on a possible fifth-season renewal at this point.

American Horror Stories (Hulu)

(Renewed, Returning for 3rd Season):  There has been no word on this anthology spin-off from AHS since its second season streamed last year, and it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during that run.  But Production Weekly has listed the third season as in production, and that tends to be a reliable source.  At this point I am going to consider it renewed, though the writers’ strike will delay production and it is not impossible that renewal could get revoked at some point.
