Cancellation Watch: The Last of Us Improves Again, The Wincesters Returns Down, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.  For the streaming ratings, see our weekly Digital Ratings posts.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Sunday, the numbers for HBO’s The Last of Us improved again, this time to a 0.21 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 747K total viewers. And according to HBO, the total audience across all platforms for that night (including encore runs) was 6.4 million. That is an increase of 12% from last week and 37% from the premiere. Not surprisingly, the show was renewed last week (as I predicted).

Over on AMC on Sunday, Mayfair Witches ticked up to a 0.07 rating based on the demo with 530K total viewers. Those numbers are not too impressive, but the show does well in digital viewing on AMC+ and appears to be a lock for a second-season renewal.

On Tuesday, The CW’s The Winchesters returned from hiatus but only posted a 0.06 rating with 367K total viewers. Of course, the fact that its lead-in was a repeat of the Fall finale did little to give it a boost.  And showrunner Robbie Thompson has given a less than promising update on the prospects of a second season saying that it is a “time of uncertainty for all of us” as Nexstar continues to shake things up at the network.

On FOX on Monday, Fantasy Island improved to a 0.24 rating with two million total viewers, but that is still one of the network’s least-watched shows so it remains On the Bubble.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

More cancellations rolled in over the last few days, skewing the Cancellation/Renewal Score.  HBO Max announced last week that both Titans and Doom Patrol will be wrapping up with their current seasons, so both of those are moving to the Ending column. FX/Hulu has cancelled Kindred after one season and Showtime has cancelled Let the Right One In after one season.  So far in January, we have seen eight genre entries cancelled or announced as ending.  HBO gave a second-season renewal to The Last of Us which acts as somewhat of an offset, but the Cancelled/Ending genre shows for this season continue to outpace the renewals 24 to 20. Below is the current Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2022-23 season, and you can keep up with this throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 63
Cancelled 12 19.0%
Ending 12 19.0% 38.1%
On the Bubble 8 12.7%
Renewal Possible 11 17.5%
Renewed 20 31.7%
