Status Updates: For All Mankind Could Be Headed to a Fourth Season, The Voyages of The Orville Could End, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

For All Mankind (Apple TV+)

(Streaming 3rd Season, Renewal Likely): There has been no official renewal announcement for this show yet, but Production Weekly has listed the fourth season as in production.  This is currently one of the Apple TV+’s most popular shows and it has been receiving plenty of good buzz, so expect an announcement during San Diego Comic-Con or as the show wraps up its third season in mid-August.

The Orville (Hulu)

(Streaming 3rd Season, On the Bubble):  There have been rumors going around for some time that The Orville‘s third season could be its last, and based on current viewership stats (or lack thereof) that could prove to be true.  There was a large gap between the second and third season (largely due to COVID-related production delays), with Seth McFarlane and other cast members since moving on to other things.  McFarlane did comment that if viewership for Season 3 was strong, a fourth season could happen.  But the show has not placed in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals the first three weeks of its release.  So at this point, with the viewership where it is and the cast dispersed, the prospects for further voyages of The Orville do not look promising.

Westworld (HBO)

(Airing 4th Season, Renewal Possible):  Westworld has kicked off its fourth season and currently the linear viewing numbers are not very high.  But it should pick up some of the slack with delayed and digital viewing and Ed Harris suggested in a recent interview that another season is in the works.  He claimed that “We have one more season, which will start filming next April and May”, which could mean that the fifth will be the show’s last.  It is reasonable to believe that HBO will allow the show to continue for at least one more season, despite the drop in its numbers, so that this much-respected sci fi entry will have the chance to wrap up its storylines.

Ms. Marvel (Disney+)

(Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible):  This new MCU series has so far had the lowest viewership of any of the television entries from that franchise on Disney+.  It appeared in the lower rungs of the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for its first week, but dropped out the following week.  I expect that it may work its way back into the Top 10 as it continues to release new episodes, but it has not engaged audiences like other MCU shows.  That does not doom its chances for a second season, but those could get shifted to a very low priority on the overall Marvel schedule.

Blood & Treasure (Paramount+)

(Streaming 2nd Season, On the Bubble):   This global action-adventure series is another one that had an extended delay between seasons, and series co-lead Matt Barr has since moved on to the CW series Walker Independence.  But now that the second season of Blood & Treasure is streaming on Paramount+ (moving over from CBS), series co-creator Matthew Federman has indicated that a third season is still possible.  He claims to have plenty more stories for the show and that if the viewership numbers are good it could continue on.  But with the cast and crew mostly dispersed, that could prove to be a challenge, and it does sound like the second season will wrap up many of the show’s storylines.
