Cancellation Watch: The Flash and Kung Fu Return Down, Most Sci Fi Shows in a Ratings Slump

Ratings Results of Interest

The Spring slump in the ratings appears to have hit early this year as the numbers for most sci fi TV shows are down and have been for a few weeks.  Usually it comes after the switch to Daylight Savings Time, but this year it has a head start.

On Wednesday, The CW’s The Flash returned from hiatus and posted a series low 0.14 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 592K total viewers.  Despite those numbers, I still expect it to be back for a ninth season.  In the lead-out hour, the supernatural drama Kung Fu had its second season debut and posted a 0.10 score with 627K total viewers. That is down from its Season 1 average but still okay for a CW entry this year.

On Sunday, AMC’s The Walking Dead hit another lowpoint as it slipped to a 0.38 rating with 1.6 million total viewers.  That shows is currently in its final season.  Starz’s Outlander remained low at a 0.05 rating with 559K total viewers, but it has already been renewed for a seventh season.  Shining Vale fell short of cable Top 150 as it only managed a 0.02 rating with 139K total viewers. That one is getting shifted to Bubble status.

On Friday, Charmed had its fourth season premiere on The CW and posted a 0.07 rating with 402K total viewers.  Those are decent enough numbers for that network on a Friday, but down from the show’s Season 3 average.  On Thursday, Legacies slipped to a series low 0.04 rating with 262K total viewers, but I still like its chances of coming back for at least one more season.

On Syfy on Wednesday, Resident Alien held at a 0.13 rating with 980K total viewers and it still appears on track for a third season renewal.  Astrid & Lilly Save the World remained low at a 0.04 score with 234K total viewers and I am moving that one to Cancellation Likely status.  Fans need to make some noise to give it any chance of surviving to a second season.

On Tuesday, Superman & Lois slipped to a series low 0.13 rating with 773K total viewers, but I still see that one flying into a third season.  Naomi slipped to a 0.06 score with 429K total viewers and the status of that freshman Arrow-verse entry may be wavering with new owners possibly moving in.  On Monday, TNT’s Snowpiercer slipped to a 0.11 rating with 551K total viewers.  It has already been renewed, but if the numbers remain low its fourth season could be its last.
