Cancellation Watch: Resident Alien Returns Strong, Snowpiercer Remains on Track, and More

Syfy’s Resident Alien returned for its second season last week and posted a 0.23 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.4 million total viewers.  That equaled its series high from last year and improved upon its first season average of a 0.19 rating, getting it off to a good start in its second year.  Leading out from that, new series Astrid & Lilly Save the World only managed a 0.05 score in the demo with 189K total viewers.  Neither Syfy nor its parent company NBCUniversal have an ownership stake in that show, so the network only makes money from the advertising.  And with numbers that low, the show will have a hard time finding sponsors, so I am starting it off On the Bubble.

On Monday last week, TNT’s Snowpiercer returned for its third season and posted a 0.22 rating in the demo with 963K total viewers.  That is down a bit from the 0.25 rating it had in its second year, but those are still good numbers for a basic cable entry these days.  And that one has already been renewed for a fourth season.  Over on The CW on Monday, 4400 continued to slide as it dropped to a 0.04 rating with 362K total viewers.  Its numbers have been down since returning from hiatus and the show could find itself on the chopping block with new ownership potentially on the way in.

On Tuesday, Superman & Lois slipped to a 0.19 rating with 904K total viewers, but it is still the top-rated genre entry on the network and likely headed to a third season.  Leading out from that, Naomi slipped to a 0.10 rating with 589K total viewers which could be enough to keep it afloat for now.  On Wednesday, Legends of Tomorrow improved to a 0.11 rating with 573K total viewers as it has been performing well for The CW since returning from hiatus.  Batwoman posted a season best 0.10 rating with 477K total viewers in the lead-out hour.

On Friday, Nancy Drew slipped to a 0.05 rating with 349K total viewers after hitting a season high last week.  As a third season show, that one should be assured a fourth year renewal despite the ratings, but the potential sale could impact that. On Saturday, Blade Runner: Black Lotus slipped to a series low 0.05rating with 141K total viewers which are not great numbers for an Adult Swim entry.  And on Sunday, The CW’s Two Sentence Horror Stories rebounded from the prior week’s series low numbers to a 0.06 rating with 247K total viewers.
