SurrealEstate Cancelled by Syfy After One Season, Showrunner Looking for New Home for the Series

The supernatural series SurrealEstate will not be continuing for a second season on Syfy according to a tweet put out by creator and showrunner George R. Olson last night (and thanks to Steven Fine for bringing it to our attention):

Olson went on to say the following about the future of the show:

We’re committed to finding a new home for #SurrealEstate, and if there’s one thing The Roman Agency knows about, it’s finding new homes. You can help us by keeping #SurrealEstate in your hearts, minds, tweets and posts.

Stay tuned. And thanks so much for believing in ghosts, demons, Roadies, LRG’s, Mumfords, low-maintenance composite decking and our little show.

SurrealEstate premiered in July with very little in the way of promotion from Syfy.  It also aired on the CTV Sci Fi Channel in Canada and I originally thought its survival was more closely tied to its performance up north.  But based on what Olson is saying in his tweet, apparently Syfy was a major partner and bowing out makes a second season unlikely unless another venue picks the show up.  Its same-day numbers were low on Syfy, averaging only a 0.06 score across its ten episodes with 315K total viewers.  For acquisitions like this, the network only makes money from advertising which is heavily driven by the same-day numbers.  Of course, it would have helped if Syfy had done more to get the word out about the show.

Olson does indicate that show will be shopped around, and the fans can certianly help with those efforts.  I don’t know if SurrealEstate developed much of a following during its short run, but those who did become attached to it should definitely take to the social networks with a Call to Action to help bring attention to this fun little supernatural entry. Watch parties would help as well and the show its still available on Syfy’s website and app. I’m guessing that this was a relatively inexpensive series to produce compared to the big dollar productions put out by the streaming services these days, so perhaps one of the smaller streamers like the horror-themed Shudder would be interested in picking it up (you can send a request at this link). A strong push from the fans could definitely help with efforts to relocate the show, and Cancelled Sci Fi will certainly help to get the word out.

SurrealEstate follows the Roman real estate agency that focuses on haunted or possessed houses in order to clear them out of their supernatural tenants before new buyers take up residence. It stars Tim Rozon (Wynonna Earp, Schitt’s Creek) and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek) along with Adam Korson, Maurice Dean Wint, and Savannah Basley.

The new season is upon us with more cancellations and renewals on the way and we still have some stragglers from the 2020-21 season waiting for word on their fates. 1. FINALLY HAD A SHOW THAT WASN’T PURE BABY PABLUM AND IT GETS CANCELLED. NOTHING LIKE IT ANYWHERE……WHERE ARE THE HEADS OF THE SYFY NETWORK……AND HOW DO THEY STILL HAVE JOBS???

  2. I loved the show! It has a lot of potential subjects to be explored! Hope Netflix can get it and make it!

  3. I too found Surreal Estate intriguing. The characters were just beginning to develop. Witty, quirky and fun with a touch of fear. Hope some other network sees the potential in the little gem.

  4. I’m so upset about this! I really enjoyed this show…I invested in season 1 now its canceled! I promised myself not to invest in Syfy shows are they up and canceled Dominion…they are so quick to drop shows! What about your audience?

  5. I love this show 2 stars from Schitts Creek how could you go wrong. I thought it was a show we would look forward to every week. With all crap shows on now they cancel this not a smart move.

  6. This was one of the best shows.new and different, funny and scary.Once again a great show is canceled, and the shows that are for the little brains (stupid and ridiculous) seam to last. Maybe it wasn’t promoted properly. Maybe . Maybe our general population prefers stupidity.

  7. I don’t know about networks, programming, advertising shares etc but I know what I like and I truly liked this show. In this age where the entertainment industry is remaking everything from movies to game shows to 70s action shows, it is truly refreshing and exciting to find something innovative and fresh. The characters were just starting to develop and the side story with Roman was interesting and had me guessing at the resolution. I really hope some network sees the potential and gives it another chance but I won’t hold my breath.

  8. I really love this show I really wish you’d come back that was a great show really look forward to watching it please bring it back

  9. So disappointing loved this show from the get-go, the characters are an absolute blast to watch each week, fingers crossed there’s a network out there to pick up this I don’t want to say scary but definitely has edge of your seat moments, imaginative, smart, funny, and interesting show up. First new syfy channel series I’ve enjoyed for sometime now.

  10. Surreal Estate is the first new show I looked forward to watching. I’ve rewatched it 3 times. Now I find out it has been cancelled. Sooo disappointed.

  11. it was grt-not like the new zombie rubbish thats on stupid–i need money and make studio to carry on with all these shows that are grt but axed-thru channels/or too whatever-like the new 4400 might as well just had 4400 black people-as the only white person to speak in it was a bully–i mean if u want tv to be good-employ good people-talented not because there THIS/THAT or whatever–y im sticking to korean movies from now-no pc shite

  12. My Friends and I loved it (Surreal Estate) Really hate to see it go.Breath of fresh air for Syfi. Too bad

  13. SyFy didn’t promote the show, put it on Friday nights, when it would be mostly doomed for high audience share. Put it on Netflix. Lucifer on Netflix has become a waste of time. This would be so much better. Put it on Netflix!!!

    1. have u seen netflix-all good shows this yr-they cancelled-unless its a diverse series-seems they wont renew-at least 35 this year big series too

    2. lucifer went bad because of netflix-so y would u want s/estate on netflix?tbh i dont think netflix/prime r worth $2 a mth never mind wtf it is now

  14. I really enjoyed this show. I hope they find a new network. I won’t be watching SyFy any more. Why don’t TV executives or Program Managers seem to understand that not all of us want to watch fake reality garbage or renewed game shows. We want television for adults without rudeness and plastic surgery. SurrealEstate was that show. Stop catering to children. There are other demographics that actually watch Television.

  15. Completely agree with what Abby said. Though this show wasn’t perfect, it was something refreshing, uncomplicated, and different from all the other stuff on Syfy. The whole premise of Surreal Estate was delightfully simple and interesting that I’m surprised no one else had thought of it before. I hope the showrunner at least gets a 2nd season on a different network to finish Roman’s story arc properly.

  16. Bad management on the part of syfi programming. SurrealEstate is one of the better shows of last season. I looked forward to it every week and am disappointed the uh network caved and, once again, disappointed fans. I’d follow this show anywhere. Why support a network that doesn’t care about the shows it airs nor its’ fans. There was little-to-no promotion. Not one of my neighbors, colleagues, friends, nor family heard of it before I turned them on to it. Turn to any other channel and get blasted with promos from shows that appear on network owned properties. Not so with SurrealEstate.

We’ve got to get a second season or closure. Don’t let us down.
