Breaking News: AMC Has Renewed Fear the Walking Dead for a Seventh Season

TWD spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead will be returning for a seventh season as confirmed today by AMC. The news does not come as a big surprise, but it was also not a sure thing. The series has seen its ratings drop over the last few years, and the first half of the sixth season produced the lowest numbers yet this Fall, including an all-time low 0.26 score based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic for its Mid-Season finale. But as I said in a post earlier this week pondering the show’s fate, I figured that AMC would not outright cancel an entry from its flagship franchise without giving it a proper wrap-up.

At this point, the seventh season of FtWD has not been announced as the show’s last, but the end is almost certainly on the horizon. The seventh season should get it to the 100 episode mark which makes it much more attractive to the syndication market (where the real profits are made). And The Walking Dead along with spin-off TWD: World Beyond will be wrapping up over the next two years. It would make sense to end Fear the Walking Dead around the same time as the franchise moves forward with its next phase which includes the planned anthology series and the Daryl and Carol spin-off series (along with the Rick Grimes movies). FtWD returns for the second half of its sixth season in 2021, and the seventh season will likely be targeting a 2022 premiere.

Fear the Walking Dead started off as a TWD prequel series, taking place during the early days of the zombie-pocalypse breakout. It later caught up with the main series (before that one took a time-jump of several years), bringing over the characters Morgan and Dwight. It currently stars Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Rubén Blades, Lennie James, Jenna Elfman, and Austin Amelio.

We are still waiting to hear word on two more AMC entries Dispatches from Elsewhere and The Terror as well as other shows like Amazon’s Tales from the Loop, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and Netflix’s Cursed, so stay tuned for more announcements.
