Ratings Results of Interest

On Sunday, HBO’s supernatural drama Lovecraft Country debuted and pulled a 0.23 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 760K total viewers. That ratings score is only slightly lower than the 0.25 number that Watchmen had with its premiere last fall. And when delayed viewing, digital viewing, and encore runs are factored in, the overall numbers should be higher. The overnight ratings are not as important for HBO shows since they are not driven by advertising revenue. But they do act as a leading indicator of audience interest, and at this point the show is off to a decent start.

On AMC on Sunday, NOS4A2 had a 0.10 rating with 347K total viewers for its airing on AMC. The BBC America simulcast slipped to a 0.01 rating with 130K total viewers as that show remains On the Bubble. On Syfy, Wynonna Earp held at a 0.7 rating with 230K total viewers as fans of that show lobby for a fifth season.

On Wednesday, ABC’s Agents of SHIELD ended its seven-year run with its two-hour series finale. It held steady with its season-to-date average pulling a 0.3 rating and 1.5 million total viewers. After its first season, AoS never enjoyed high ratings numbers and it was On the Bubble several times. But ABC and Disney believed in it and kept it on the air for an extended run. We bid that show a fond farewell after covering it for the past seven years at CancelledSciFi.com.

On The CW on Wednesday, The 100 held at a 0.1 rating with 581K total viewers. That show is in its final season. On Tuesday on The CW, Stargirl held steady at a 0.2 rating with 860K total viewers for its season finale. That one will be returning for a second year where it will air exclusively on The CW.

DC Universe Shows Move to HBO Max

Continuing the coverage of the demise of DC Universe from last week’s post, DC’s Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee has confirmed that all of the original series from DCU will be moving to HBO Max:

The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The amount of content you get, not just DC, but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.

The only exception to that is Stargirl which will air exclusively on The CW starting with its second season. The move of the other shows to HBO Max is something that I have been predicting for a while, and DCU will likely shut down at some point or shift its focus solely to comics at a lower monthly subscription rate. The live-action Titans and the animated Young Justice both have new seasons in the works that will stream on HBO Max. The animated Harley Quinn and the live-action Doom Patrol have already moved to HBO Max and we are waiting to hear word on a third season for each.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

Siren (Freeform, Season Ended, Cancelled): The numbers dropped notably for this show in its third season, but it still performed at the same level as supernatural drama Motherland Fort Salem which airs on the same channel and was renewed. But apparently Freeform lost confidence in Siren and decided not to bring it back for another year. Fans are currently lobbying for a fourth season, so perhaps it will switch to another venue at some point.

Star Trek Lower Decks (CBS All Access, Streaming, Status – Renewal Possible): There have been some indications that CBS execs are not happy with the early performance of this show, but those come from the rumor mill. Unless I see something more substantial, I will consider this one to have a decent chance of renewal as with most streaming shows.
