Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Shadowhunters Cancelled by Freeform, Though It Will Get a 2-Hour Finale

Freeform announced earlier this week that its fantasy / supernatural series Shadowhunters will be ending after its third season, though the network has ordered two additional episodes to wrap up the show’s storylines. That one went on hiatus a couple of weeks ago after airing the first half of its third season, and the second half appeared to be heading toward a late Summer return date. But with the cancellation, the network has moved those episodes to a 2019 start so that they can air together with the final two episodes which will be produced later this year. That group of episodes will be referred to as Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt and will cover books four through six from the series of novels. The cancellation does not come as a huge surprise because the same day ratings for the show were down notably this past Spring. I have had the show at Bubble status for a while, though I didn’t move it to Cancellation Likely because it continues to see strong support on the social networks and Freeform has previously cited “stickiness on the social nets” as a reason they kept a lower rated series going (Stitchers was the particular show they were referencing, but that one was cancelled after its third season). The additional two-episode finale will give the show the chance to wrap up the story from the books by covering the sixth in the series, though I expect fans of the TV show to raise objections and lobby for another network to keep the show going. With Amazon recently saving The Expanse after the Syfy cancellation and FOX’s Lucifer edging toward a pickup, fans will likely be encouraged to campaign for a continuation of Shadowhunters and they will likely target Netflix (which owns the international streaming rights) or Hulu (which has the show available for streaming in the States).

Shadowhunters is based on the Mortal Instruments book series by by Cassandra Clare and follows a group of people who are born with angelic blood and who protect humans from demons. It stars Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood. Alberto Rosende, and Matthew Daddario.

There are still a few more shows from the regular season awaiting word on their fates such as Timeless, Into the Badlands, and Altered Carbon. Be sure to follow CancelledSciFi.com and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news on these shows and more.
