Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Legion Renewed for a Third Season by FX, The Rain Will Continue for a Second Season on Netflix

FX announced just this afternoon that its X-Men spin-off series Legion will be returning for a third season.  The renewal was definitely not a given because the show’s numbers are down by over fifty percent in its second year.  FX had ordered one additional episode for the show’s second season and I thought that might end up acting as the series finale.  But apparently the network has decided to keep the show going for another year.  The fact the the series is owned by FOX, which also owns FX, and that it ties into the X-Men movies (though only tangentially so far) might have helped keep it alive.  If its numbers continue to slip in its third season, though, it will remain firmly On the Bubble.

Legion follows the mutant David Haller who is the son of Charles Xavier and believed to be schizophrenic, and who may also be the most powerful mutant in the world.  It stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, and Jeremie Harris.

On Wednesday of this week, Netflix has given a second season renewal to its post-apocalyptic series The Rain.  The series is a Danish production that streams in the U.S. with subtitles.  Netflix has not revealed the viewership for the show (they usually keep those numbers under wraps), but apparently it has done well enough in the States and overseas to justify the renewal.  And most of the genre entries from the streaming service have received at least a second season renewal, though this year’s Altered Carbon is still waiting for word on whether it will be back for a second year (series star Joel Kinnaman have moved on to a new gig).

The Rain takes place in a post-apocalyptic Scandinavia after a virus carried by the rain has wiped out most humans in the territory. A young group of survivors emerge from their shelters and search for signs of life. The series stars Jannik Tai Mosholt, Lasse Kyed Rasmussen, and Marie Østerbye. The second season is expected to bow at some point in 2019.
