Cancellation Watch Breaking News: The CW Has Renewed iZombie for a 5th Season

Finally! Some good news after a rough day of cancellation announcements (Lucifer was axed by FOX and The Expanse was dropped by Syfy)! The CW has announced that its zombie dramedy iZombie, based on the comic book of the same name, will be returning for a fifth season. That news does not come as a huge surprise, though I started to waver on the show when The 100 was renewed earlier in the week with no word on iZombie. But with the renewal, The CW continues its trend of keeping low-rated shows on the air through at least the seventy-episode mark. That network also rarely outright cancels a show after it has made it past the second season mark. I wasn’t certain if the network would buck those trends this year because it has a lot of shows in development (and actually picked up most of them), and I had moved iZombie to Bubble status earlier in the week. But I was still leaning heavily toward renewal, and the network did as expected. That fact that The CW added a night to its schedule next season–it will start programming Sunday nights again–likely factored into the decision to keep both iZombie and The 100 on the air for another year. Both are almost certainly headed into their final seasons, but The CW has not made that official yet.

There are still several more shows awaiting word on their fates, but we should know the status of most the sci fi and fantasy entries by the time the networks present their 2018-19 schedules at the Upfronts next week. Be sure to follow our Cancellation Watch Tracker as well as the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for breaking news over the next few days.
