Cancellation Watch: Happy! Gets Renewed, Counterpart and Falling Water Improve

Syfy Will Stay Happy! for Another Season

Coming as no surprise, Syfy announced yesterday that their dark fantasy Happy! will be returning for a second season. It’s not quite the “breakout hit” Deadline Hollywood claims it is, but it has been a solid performer for its network. It bowed in December with a 0.4 rating based on same day viewing in the 18-49 demographic, the best debut Syfy had seen in a while. But it quickly slipped to less than half those numbers, averaging a 0.18 rating since its premiere. But those are decent ratings for that network these days and I have been expecting this one to get the renewal nod. There is no word at this point on how many episodes to expect in the second season, but it will most likely get more than the eight it had in its first year, probably ten to thirteen. The Season 1 finale airs this Wednesday at 10 PM EST.

Happy! focuses a down-on-his-luck ex-cop who finds himself followed by the imaginary blue winged horse of the title and on a mission to save a girl who has been kidnapped. It stars Nick Sax, Patton Oswalt, Lili Mirojnick, and Ritchie Coster. It is based on the comic book of the same name created by Grant Morrison and artist Darick Robertson.

Stay tuned to this site because I am expecting to hear cancellation announcements on Ghost Wars and Superstition pretty soon, both of which under-performed on Syfy this past Fall.

Ratings Results of Interest: Counterpart and Falling Water Improve

On Sunday, Starz’s new parallel universe series Counterpart improved with its second episode to a 0.11 rating based on same day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 506K total viewers. That is still a bit low for a Starz entry, but we will see how this one trends in the coming weeks. On Saturday, USA’s Falling Water improved to a 0.13 rating with 424K total viewers as that one continues to trend up. I’m not quite ready to take it off Bubble status yet, but will see how it performs the next few weeks. On Friday, Agents of SHIELD held at a 0.6 rating with 2.3 million total viewers. Based on what ABC said at the TCAs, that show could stick around for another season.

I covered the ratings from the first part of the week on Friday at this link and you can see the full ratings results at this link.  Be sure to follow the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for the latest ratings results as well as breaking news.  Ratings source: ShowBuzzDaily.
