Coming as no big surprise, Netflix has announced a second season of their Marvel-based series The Punisher. That show, which is a spin-off of sorts from Daredevil, debuted on the streaming service last month and has been pretty well received among the fan community. I have seen no info on the audience size because Netflix keeps those number close to the vest, but I assume it has generated at least decent viewership like the other entries in the Defenders series. The main doubt there may have been about a second season of The Punisher on Netflix relates to the upcoming Disney streaming service. Word is that any new Marvel shows will reside there going forward, but it hasn’t been clear where the Defenders entries stand.
At this point, it looks like those will remain with Netflix, but that could change once Disney gets its service up and running. Interestingly enough, there has been no confirmation on a second season of The Defenders team-up series, the first season debuted in August, but perhaps that is just assumed as long as the solo series are running.
The Punisher follows a former Marine who sets out to punish the criminals responsible for his family’s murder, but then finds himself caught up in a larger conspiracy. It stars Jon Bernthal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ben Barnes, and Amber Rose Revah. The second season will likely stream in early 2019.
Also renewed is USA’s cyber drama series Mr. Robot, another announcement that comes as no surprise. That series has seen its ratings drop in its third season (which airs its season finale tonight), but it likely makes up some of the slack with digital viewing and it has been a critical success. The show has won at the Emmys and Christian Slater was just nominated for a Golden Globe award. So despite its low linear viewing, the series has enjoyed positive buzz through its first three seasons and brings plenty of attention to its network.
Mr. Robot follows brilliant but anti-social Elliot Alderson who becomes a cyber-vigilante fighting the threats of such mega-companies as Evil Corp. It was created by Sam Esmail and stars Rami Malek, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, and Christian Slater.
