constantine-nbc-cancelledDescription: Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Criminal Minds”) is armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit. He fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to abandon his campaign against evil until a series of events thrusts him back into the fray, and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine will use his skills to travel the country, find the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

Breaking News: (Updated 1/11/17) Matt Ryan will be returning to the character of John Constantine in an animated series that will air on The CW’s digital channel CW Seed.  Whether that will lead to more appearances of the character in that network’s live-action superhero shows remains to be seen.  More on that at this link.

Why Was it Cancelled?  Constantine received plenty of good buzz from fans and critics, but it could never find a large enough audience on Prime Time.  That’s largely because it never did fit well on the broadcast networks (especially when NBC moved it to the 8 PM EST hour) and should have been on one of the cable channels from the start.  There was word that it might shift to NBC’s sister network Syfy, but that appears unlikely.  AMC would be a better landing spot, or one of the pay channels or streaming services.  Word is that Warner Bros. studio is actively trying to shop it around, so the show may still live on.  It all depends on how much effort the studio puts behind keeping it alive, and a fan uprising could definitely help its cause.

Update 8/11/15: The show’s producer Daniel Cerone had previously announced that the attempts to shop Constantine around “didn’t pan out” and “that the show is over”, but a chance of the character showing up on The CW’s  Arrow had been floated around and now it looks like it will happen.  More on that at this link.

It’s a shame – I wanted to like “Constantine” much more than I actually did. But, the show never did grab me, and I feel only a little regret about wasted potential now that it’s gone. I wonder if there is any crossover potential with “Lucifer”? I seem to recall the characters of both shows existed in the same universe, at least in the “Sandman” comics…. Done right, that could be a lot of fun.
