Cancellation Watch/The Charts: Season Finale Numbers, Late Results for Penny Dreadful and Warehouse 13

Singles Vacations

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings Results for the Tuesday through Thursday sci fi / fantasy shows:

Ratings Results: ABC’s Agents of SHIELD had it season finale on Tuesday but pulled less than impressive numbers as it achieved only a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.5 million total viewers.  That is up by one tick from the prior week, but still lower than what I’m thinking ABC wants to see from this show.  It has been renewed for a second season, but it won’t be going in on strong footing and will likely need to improve its numbers right away (difficult for a second year show) if it wants to earn any additional seasons.  The CW’s The Originals improved to a 0.8 rating with 1.8 million total viewers for its season finale.  That show will face an uphill climb when it moves to Mondays next season.  Supernatural held steady at a 0.8 rating with 1.7 million total viewers and it will have its season finale is next week.  That one returns next season in the same timeslot with new entry Flash as its lead-in.  Over on CBS, Person of Interest held steady with its season finale, pulling a 1.9 rating with 11 million total viewers.  That show returns in the same timeslot next season.  On Wednesday, Revolution improved slightly to a 1.2 rating with just under four million total viewers for its second to last episode.  It has been cancelled, but the fans are still fighting for it.  On The CW, Arrow improved slightly to a 0.9 rating with 2.4 million total viewers for its season finale while The 100 remained steady at a 0.6 score with 1.7 million total viewers (its season finale is not until June).  Both shows have been renewed and will return to the same timeslots next year.  On Thursday, Vampire Diaries improved by a tick to a 0.8 rating with 1.6 million total viewers (based on the preliminaries) for its season finale.  This and the other CW shows are surely hoping to turnaround their ratings slump when they return next season.  Also on Thursday night, the second half of NBC’s Rosemary’s Baby mini-series slipped to a 1.0 rating 3.3 million tot viewers.

penny-dreadful-cancelledDelayed Ratings Results: Both Showtime’s Penny Dreadful and Syfy’s Warehouse 13 did not make it into the Cable Top 100 for their nights this past week, but I now have their numbers thanks to Futon Critic.  The former series pulled a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo with about 900k total viewers.  Those are okay numbers for a premium channel especially when you factor in that the premiere episode was available as a sneak peak online prior to its debut.  But it’s definitely no Game of Thrones ratings monarch.  Warehouse 13 could only muster a 0.3 score with about 800k total viewers for its penultimate episode.  If that show had not already been in its final season, it surely would be facing cancellation at this point.

The Charts:  Another typical week of chart activity as Game of Thrones beat all non-sports programming  and everything else on television except a new episode of The Big Bang Theory for the week of May 5th to 11th.  GoT did get bumped down a few notches on the Nieslen Twitter Rankings largely because the NFL draft dominated that chart for the week and the premiere of 24: Live Another Day had plenty of activity as well.  Resurrection has slipped out of the broadcast network charts because it has already ended its first season.  Next week will bring the season finale chart activity for Agents of SHIELD, Once Upon A Time, and Person of Interest and then we probably will not be seeing any genre shows in the broadcast network Top 25 until Under the Dome has its debut in late June (you can get a first look at the Summer sci fi TV schedule at this link).  You can see the full chart activity for the week below beneath the ratings grid.

We now know the status of all the 2013-14 shows and you can see the complete rundown at the Cancellation Watch page.  And for more information on the ratings numbers and how I determine the Cancellation Alert status of a show, see the Cancelled Sci Fi FAQ.
