Cancellation Watch: Game of Thrones Continues to Slay the Competition in Prime Time

Unless otherwise noted, the ratings numbers below are based on the final overnights and may vary slightly from the preliminaries reported on the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site.

Ratings Results for the Friday through Monday sci fi / fantasy shows:

peter-dinklagegameofthronesRatings Win: With its second Season 4 episode, HBO’s Game of Thrones may have slipped a bit with its numbers, but it still topped almost everything else on television for the past week.  Sunday’s episode pulled a 3.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.3 million total viewers which by far out-paced everything else on television that night and had it as the third most watched non-sports airing in the demographic for the Monday through Sunday timeframe.  And while it may not be pulling Walking Dead level numbers, it is still putting up strong ratings for a premium channel and is helping the cable networks in general to gain on the old scho0l broadcast nets.  It came as no surprise that HBO announced the show’s renewal last week, securing it through a sixth season.

On the Hot Seat: On Friday, ABC’s The Neighbors actually improved its numbers slightly to a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demo with 4.1 million total viewers.  That’s not too much of a win, though, as that show still looks to be on schedule for a date with the network executioner.  NBC’s Hannibal fell to a series low of a 0.7 rating with 2.3 million total viewers, delivering numbers that just might be too low even though that series is a less expensive international production.  On Sunday, NBC’s Believe remained at a 1.0 rating with 4.3 million total viewers.  The good news for that one is that it did not drop from last week, that bad news is that it was already at cancellation levels.  On Monday, The CW’s Star-Crossed remained at a 0.3 rating with 800k total viewers as that one continues to head towards certain cancellation.  And The Tomorrow People slipped to a 0.4 rating with 1.1 million total viewers as it will likely follow Star-Crossed out the door at season end.

Other Ratings News: On Friday, NBC’s Grimm slipped to a season low of a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demo with 4.7 million total viewers.  The preponderance of reruns last week may have been to blame as it appears to have driven off viewers. And that trend carried over into Sunday as  ABC’s Once Upon A Time slipped to a 2.0 rating (down from last week’s 2.4) with 6.5 million total viewers.  Those ratings were that show’s lowest since returning from hiatus, but they don’t put it in any danger of cancellation.  Resurrection slipped a tick to a 2.1 rating with 7.5 million total viewers, but it didn’t drop as much as Once Upon A Time and it tied Family Guy as the most watched broadcast network show for the night, so it still looks to be safe for now.  On FOX, the Cosmos reboot slipped to a 1.3 rating with 3.5 million total viewers.  On Monday, Syfy’s Warehouse 13 returned for its fifth and final season but could only manage a 0.4 rating with 1.4 million total viewers , continuing the ratings slide it experienced last Summer.   And that network’s premieres of two import shows, Continuum on Friday and Metal Hurlant Chronicles on Monday, did not crack the Cable Top 100, but then those shows do not rely as heavily on their ratings in the U.S.  The latter show has already been renewed for a second season in France and the former is still waiting for Canadian channel Showcase to decide if it will come back for a fourth year.

There are plenty of genre shows on the verge of a date with the network executioner, and an announcement could come at any time.  Keep an eye on this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for any breaking news.  You can see the current status for all this season’s genre shows at this link,  and for more information on the ratings numbers and how I determine the Cancellation Alert status of a show, see the Cancelled Sci Fi FAQ.
