Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Iron Fist Series Cancelled by Netflix and Marvel, But Character Could Return

Word broke late yesterday that Netflix’s superhero series Iron Fist will not continue for a third season.  In a joint statement with Disney, the companies announced the show will be ending with its second season, but they did add that “the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”  The first season of the show was not well-received by fans or critics, but the second season earned much better reviews and seemed to have the character headed in the right direction.  Netflix does not share its viewing numbers, but apparently they believed that Iron Fist was not performing well enough to justify a third season.  It is possible that the character could still show up on one of Netflix’s other Marvel shows: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and/or Luke Cage.  The latter (which is expected to get a third season renewal) would be the most likely because the two heroes combined forces for a long run in the comics during the 70’s.  It is also possible that Iron Fist could show up on Disney’s upcoming streaming service which is already planning mini-series for the characters Loki and Scarlet Witch.  So while Iron Fist the series may be ending, the character will likely be back at some point.  This is the first cancellation among Netflix’s Marvel shows, though The Defenders is currently in limbo with no second season plans at the moment.

Iron Fist focuses on martial arts expert Danny Rand who uses the mystical powers of the Iron Fist to fight against crime and other evil forces in New York City. It stars Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Tom Pelphrey, and Jessica Stroup.

The Fall season is just getting started, but expect more announcements to be made over the next month or so. Plus, there are still several Summer and Spring shows that we are waiting to hear word on such as Humans, Into the Badlands, and Reverie.
