Cancellation Watch: Monarch – Legacy of Monsters Ramps Up for Third Season, Crystal Lake Enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV, Status: Renewal Possible): Apple TV has been silent on its Monsterverse series Monarch – Legacy of Monsters since that one wrapped up its second season in May, but it looks like things are moving forward for a third season. According to Variety, the streamer is in talks with Legendary about continuing the show, but there will be some changes. The proposed third season would have new showrunners and writers, and it would also introduce new Titans. There is no word at this point on the cast, but it seems likely they would keep at least some of the main characters. This is not an official renewal yet, but the show has been one of the better-performing originals for Apple TV, and a spin-off focusing on Wyatt Russell’s Lee Shaw is currently in the works as well.

Crystal Lake (Peacock, Status: Mini-Series): This Friday the 13th prequel series made it to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere at the Number 4 slot, pulling in an estimated 774 million minutes of viewing based on Nielsen sampling. That is quite good for a Peacock original, and as reported last week, it counts as the third most-watched series for that streamer. It has not received a renewal yet, but the showrunners do have plans for a second season, and that looks like a strong possibility at this point.

Carrie (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This reboot of the horror classic held strong in its second week, slipping just one slot to Number 2 and pulling in an estimated 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. It has been renewed for a second season, and that will take the story beyond the Stephen King novel it is based on.

VisionQuest (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This series did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere when it released its first two episodes. It did make it to the Number 1 slot on Disney+ in the U.S. and across countries worldwide, so the early viewership numbers do look good. It has been pegged as a mini-series and wraps up the arc that began with WandaVision and continued to Agatha All Along.
