The story of Mike Flanagan’s Carrie will continue beyond the book as Amazon has renewed the show for a second season. Originally referred to as a mini-series, the first season covered Stephen King’s debut novel over eight episodes, but Flanagan had previously mentioned that he was approaching it “not as a finite story”, and that he was considering ways to expand on the world. And the show did make a major change from the book at the end, leaving it on a cliffhanger and suggesting a continuation. The renewal proves that the mini-series designation does not necessarily mean a show is close-ended if the viewership is strong enough.
The first season, which released all episodes at one time, topped the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its debut week, pulling an estimated 1.3 billion minutes of viewing based on Nielsen sampling. Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global Television Peter Friedlander had the following to say about the renewal:
Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers. It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.
Mike Flanagan will remain onboard as showrunner for the second season, and Stephen King will continue as executive producer.
