Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
American Horror Story (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): The three-episode premiere for the thirteenth season of this horror anthology series pulled in 378K viewers for its linear airings, which is decent for a basic cable series but not spectacular. It did much better in digital viewing on Hulu, though, placing at Number 2 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for acquired shows and pulling in an estimated 763 million minutes viewed (based on Nielsen sampling). I had previously thought they might wrap this one up with its thirteenth season, seeing as viewership has been slipping the last few years. But creator Ryan Murphy has indicated he would like to keep the show going, and with this resurgence, it could stick around for a few more years.
Below (Netflix, Status: Ending): This eco horror series had a strong showing in its first week, topping the Netflix chart for English-based television shows and pulling in 69.3 million hours watched across 17 million accounts. That has it off to a strong start, enjoying the most-watched single week for a series this season on that service. It was designed as a closed-ended mini-series, but it did leave open the possibility of continuing, and Netflix execs may be considering that at this point.
Eternally Yours (CBS, Status: Renewal Possible): This vampire comedy premiered last Thursday and drew a 0.31 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 4.1 million total viewers. That is down a little from what Ghosts saw in the same timeslot last year, but it was still one of the most-watched shows on broadcast for the evening. This represents a decent start for the series, but the numbers typically drop after the premiere, so we will have to see how it tracks in the coming weeks.
Coven Academy (CBS, Status: Renewal Possible): I have not seen the linear viewing numbers for the premiere of this supernatural drama on Freeform yet, but according to The Wrap, its encore run on Disney+ and Hulu brought in 11.4 million views globally in its first week, and it ranked as the Number 1 show among teens 12-17. That definitely has it off to a good start, and it looks like school could be in session at the academy for another season or more if its numbers hold.
Lanterns (HBO, Status: Renewal Possible): The prospects continue to look bright for this show as viewership for its Season 1 finale improved to 10.5 million viewers globally across all platforms over its first three days, according to The Wrap. HBO Boss Casey Bloys had previously made comments suggesting that nothing new was in the works among DCU projects, but early prep has begun on the second season of this show, and the global viewership numbers certainly suggest that it could continue.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+/Netflix, Status: Renewed): Netflix has licensed this fantasy series for encore runs, and the first season premiered on that service last week, hitting Number 3 in that streamer’s chart and pulling in 21.6 million hours viewed across 4.1 million accounts. The third season of the show is set to premiere on Disney+ next month, and there has been no word on a fourth yet. That streamer has been pulling away from ongoing series lately, but with the success of Percy Jackson in encore runs, that may be enough to convince the Mouse House to keep this one going a little longer.
