Why Watch It?

With the new Green Lantern series Lanterns now airing on HBO August 16th, it is worth taking a look at this animated version of the character from the early 2010s that recently arrived on Tubi. The series premiered during a particularly strong era for DC animation, with Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) serving as co-creator as well as one of the executive producers. Instead of relying on familiar Gotham or Metropolis settings, Green Lantern ventured deep into space and built an expansive mythology around the various Lantern Corps. The CGI animation has aged quite well, and the series delivered an expansive tale while also giving viewers a chance to explore corners of the DC Universe that had rarely appeared on television. The series embraces the cosmic side of the DC Universe, offering space opera adventures that feel more like Star Trek or Babylon 5 than a traditional superhero cartoon.

The show also benefited from a strong voice cast led by longtime voice-actors Josh Keaton (Voltron: Legendary Defender) as Hal Jordan and Kevin Michael Richardson (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Kilowog. Sadly, it lasted only one season, reportedly becoming a casualty of disappointing toy sales and the poor performance of the live-action Green Lantern movie released around the same time. But it does deliver a mostly complete story, serialized over its 26 episodes and building toward an impressive finale. And over the years, it has developed a devoted following, with many DC fans considering it one of the most underrated animated superhero series ever produced. If you missed this one during its original run—or if you’ve only seen the less-than-stellar live-action Green Lantern film—this series is well worth adding to your watch list.

Where Is It Streaming?

Starting on September 1st Green Lantern: The Animated Series is available to stream free (with ads) on Tubi as part of the service’s growing library of Warner Bros. Animation classics. Tubi has been adding a number of fan-favorite animated series recently, making it an increasingly attractive destination for genre fans looking to revisit classic cartoons without paying a subscription fee. That service does run ads, but typically only one or two short breaks during a thirty-minute episode. And Tubi has quite a number of other sci fi TV movies and shows that are worth checking out as well. The series has also been released on Blu-ray, and you can purchase it VOD.
