Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
The Ghost in the Shell (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This anime reboot has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings through the second week of its first season, but that is not uncommon for animated entries. It is only releasing one episode per week, so it could take a while to get enough viewers to rank in the charts, and animated series like this tend to appeal to a niche audience. There are plans for additional seasons, so if it does meet up to viewership expectations, it could continue to a second year and more.
The Beauty (FX/Hulu, Status: On the Bubble): This horror series did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its encore run on Hulu, and the viewership numbers on that service were not very strong. According to Luminate, the series premiere pulled in only two million viewers over its first ten days, putting it in the lower half of Hulu originals for the 2025-26 season. The cast and crew have been released from their contracts, so at this point, it is looking like this series could be one-and-done. If there are any fans out there, they should probably make some noise on the social networks to bring it more attention, and perhaps FX/Hulu will give it a chance for a second season.
House of the Dragon (HBO, Status: Renewed): The Game of Thrones franchise continues to perform well for HBO as this prequel series wrapped up its third season on a high note. According to that premium cable channel, the finale reached 21 million viewers worldwide, with more than half of those (11 million) coming in the United States. That comes just 500K short of the Season 3 premiere viewership, and definitely counts this one as a hit for HBO. It has been renewed for a fourth year and will wrap up at that point.
Heroes (Netflix, Status: Encore Run): All four seasons of this superhero entry arrived on Netflix in July, pushing it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings Top 10 for acquired shows for the week of July 13th at the Number 8 slot with an estimated 593 million minutes viewed. Sadly, series co-star Hayden Panettiere passed away this week at age 36.
