Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
The Ark (Syfy, Status: Renewal Possible): Syfy’s only original series left on the schedule returned for its third season and posted a 0.03 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 181K total viewers. That is down slightly from where the numbers were in its second season two years ago, but perhaps not terrible for a basic cable entry these days. That network seems to have shied away from scripted programming, but this show has developed somewhat of a dedicated following, so it could continue to a fourth season if the numbers hold.
The The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): This TWD spin-off continues to lumber along, pulling in a 0.05 rating in the demo with 297K total viewers for its Season 3 premiere. Those numbers are much lower than the franchise’s glory days, but the overnights are not as important to this one. The streaming numbers on AMC+ (which are not typically shared) are more of a factor for its fate, and Netflix has re-upped its license for the franchise for another five years. My guess at this point is that Dead City will follow the same path as Daryl Dixon and continue to a fourth season, after which it will wrap up (and then the next spin-off will get queued up).
American Horror Story (FX, Status: Renewed): This season-long anthology series is set to return for its thirteenth year in September, and Ryan Murphy has said that will bring all the prior seasons together. It has not been announced as the final season yet, but this one has run out of its advance renewals, and 13 years seems like a good point to cap off a horror series, with Murphy’s plans allowing it to go out with a bang. I won’t be counting it as a Bubble entry, but it sure does seem like this one is prepping for its finale. As for the spin-off American Horror Stories, there has been no word on a fourth season of that one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it came back for a final run as well.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This series held at the Number 3 slot in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the second week of its second season, pulling in an estimated 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. That is down from its first season, but still pretty good for a streaming original. It has already been renewed for a third season, and it will wrap up at that point.
The Last Ship (Netflix, Status: Encore Run): This post-apocalyptic series topped the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for acquired shows for a second week in a row, pulling in an estimated 942 million minutes of viewing and besting House of the Dragon again. It has proven quite popular so far with its encore run on Netflix, and while I haven’t heard of any plans for a revival, it’s possible this one could sail again at some point.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
The 2025-26 season has officially come to an end, and that was capped off with the announcement that Dinsey+ has reversed its renewal of Wonder Man, cancelling that one after one season. That puts the score at 15 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (20% of shows tracked) vs. 37 renewed (50%) with 22 still awaiting word on their fates.
