Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
Inteview with the Vampire (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): I have not seen the linear ratings for the third season (retitled to The Vampire Lestat) of this supernatural drama yet, but according to the AMC’s chief content officer and president of AMC Studios Dan McDermott it is performing quite well in digital viewing:
On our streaming platform, we had a 30-day estimate for the show in terms of how it would perform, and it exceeded the 30-day estimate in seven days, and it has now doubled the 30-day estimate in the first 20 days. To say it’s significantly over-performing for us would be accurate.
That is certainly good news for the show and he went on to talk about future plans claiming that they are considering doing at least two more seasons and looking at the books The Queen of the Damned and The Tale of the Body Thief for the next stories to adapt. I’m not going to count this as an official renewal just yet, but since the two more season comment is coming from AMC’s boss, it’s about as close as you can get, and I expect an announcement on this show at any time.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewed): While this fantasy series slipped one slot in the Netflix Top 10 in the second week of its sophomore season to Number 3, its viewership improved from its premiere. The hours watched went up 11% to 71.5 million and the households tuning in improved 10% to 9.6 million. That does not quite make up for the large drop the series saw from its first to second season, but it is still pulling strong numbers for an original on that service. This one has already been renewed for a third season, and it will wrap up at that point.
Spider-Noir (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This superhero series slipped to Number 4 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings in its second week, pulling in an estimated 739 million minutes of viewing. Those numbers are not bad, though, and its weekly average places it as the fourth most-watched Prime Video original for the 2025-26 season. There has been no word on a second year renewal at this point, and this is likely an expensive series to produce, but it could continue for more seasons.
The Legend of Vox Machina (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This animated fantasy entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the premiere week of its fourth season, but it has not spent much time in those charts. The show has already been renewed for a fifth year, and it will wrap up at that point.
