Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.
Status Updates
The Buroughs (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This series made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at the Number 2 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in an impressive 1.2 billion minutes of viewing. It also spent three weeks in the Netflix Top 10, but that was not enough for that streamer and they cancelled the show after one season. You can read more on that at this link.
The Rig (Prime Video, Status: Cancelled): It has now been a year and a half since the second season of this show premiered and there has been no word on a third season and nothing showing up in Production Weekly. This one was given very little in the way of promotion by Amazon, and I was surprised it even got a second season. Series stars Ian Glen and Rochenda Sandall have both suggested there is more story to tell and that they are willing to return for a third year. But almost certainly by this time the cast and crew have been released from their contracts, so I am assuming has quietly moved on and I am shifting this one to Cancelled status. The show likely had international partners involved, and perhaps there would be an interest in continuing this on on a different platform. Fans should make some noise on the social networks to bring it more attention, and maybe another venue will take a flyer on it.
The Wonderfools (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This Korean superhero comedy made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings the week after its premiere, landing at the Number 8 slot with an estimated 339 million minutes watched. It also spent three weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for Non-English Language shows, averaging 24 million hours watched per week over that time. It has not received a second season renewal just yet, but with these numbers, the streaming service should have an interest in bringing it back.
The Amazing Digital Circus (Netflix, Status: Ended): This web series made it into the Netflix Top 10 last week, likely boosted by its finale appearing in theaters, landing at the Number 8 slot with 8.8 million hours watched across 1.8 million households. My understanding is that the show, which is available to view for free on YouTube, is considered a one-off and that no second season is planned. But fans will likely keep an eye out for the next project from this creative team.
