Sci Fi TV News of Note:
A Mad Max TV series could be in the works and that would accompany a final film in the post-apocalyptic franchise. George Miller would like to expand on that universe and he is currently in talks with several studios on where it could go next. He wants to do a sixth movie, and that would act as the climax to the film series. In addition, he wants to do a televison series that would explore the world and characters beyond the movies. Miller went to Warner Bros. first and they have passed on it, so now he is in talks with other studios. Stay tuned for further developments on this one.
Doctor Who will be going on a hiatus as current showrunner Russel T. Davis will be leaving the series and the planned Christmas Special has been scrapped. The BBC has put out the following statement concerning the future of the show:
After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.
And Davis had this to say: “GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender”. Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski previously expressed and interest in joining the series as showrunner, and he mentioned that once again with the news that Davis is leaving. Disney was partnering with the BBC during the two seasons with Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, but they have since dropped out. The BBC does have plans to continue the series, and they are currently looking for other partners to help with the financing.
As mentioned above, Apple TV has given a second season renewal to its supernatural dramedy Widow’s Bay. That one wraps up this week and the second season will likely arrive at some point in 2027.
In casting news, Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman) has joined HBO’s The Last of Us for its upcoming third and final season. He will be playing Amon, one of the leaders of The Seraphites, who is not part of the video game series.
