Cancellation Watch: The Boroughs Tops the Netflix Charts, The Boys Shows Its Strength in Its Final Season, and More

Cancellation Watch: Weekly status updates and cancellation/renewal predictions for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services.

Status Updates

The Boroughs (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This sci fi series improved to Number 1 in its second week of release after debuting at the Number 2 slot. For its most recent viewing stats, the show pulled in 59.4 million hours (up from 35.3 million in its first week) across 9.5 million households (up from 5.6 million). In addition, it has scored well with critics and viewers so far, currently holding a 97% Tomatometer Score (based on critics reviews) and an 81% Popcornmeter Score (based on audience feedback) on Rotten Tomatoes. There has been no word on a second season, but the show is off to a strong start, and a renewal seems like a good bet as this point.

The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Final Season): This superhero series has held the Number 1 slot in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for two weeks in a row as it delivers a strong performance in its final season. For the week of April 27th, the show pulled in an estimated 947 million minutes of viewing, which was a high point for its current season. It is wrapping up, but spin-off shows Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico are in the works, with more possibly on the way.

Widow’s Bay (Apple TV, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural dramedy did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its debut week, but that is not uncommon for shows from this streamer. According to Samba TV, the debut episode pulled in 992K households, but the numbers dropped for the next two episodes. It has scored quite well on Rotten Tomatoes, though, currently holding a 97% Tomatometer Score (based on critics reviews) and a 92% Popcornmeter Score (based on audience feedback), and Apple TV tends to be supportive of its originals. But, fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention.

The Terror (Shudder/AMC+, Status: Renewal Possible): This season-long horror anthology returned for its third season seven years after its second aired on AMC, though we have no viewership numbers available at this point. Neither Shudder nor AMC+ are included in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and I have not seen any stats from other sources out there. Word is that it has performed well on the AMC+ charts, and that could lead to the show returning for a fourth season.
