Streaming Sci Fi TV: Amazon’s Prime Video Has Quite a Number of Sci Fi and Fantasy Originals Available for Viewing

Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.  Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice.

Amazon got into the streaming original game right around the same time that Netflix and Hulu started ramping up their scripted originals. The first sci fi entry for Amazon’s Prime Video was The Man in the High Castle, and that one has gone on to be considered a genre classic (more on that at this link). The streamer has experimented with several different types of shows with its originals, putting out some unique and/or fan-favorite entries like Tales from the Loop, Truth Seekers, Undone, and Paper Girls (none of which lasted long). Also, Amazon did save The Expanse from cancellation after Syfy gave up on the show, and they produced three more seasons of that show. In the last few years, Prime Video has focused on high-profile, big-budget shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Fallout, The Wheel of Time, The Boys, and the upcoming Warhammer 40K series (with Henry Cavill). This led to some lavish productions and pretty good viewership numbers, but it is also not sustainable, and I expect they will start scaling back on the budgets of their originals at some point.

Some Amazon shows have enjoyed a decent run on Prime Video while others have disappeared rather quickly. The Boys is headed to a fifth season, which will be its last, and The Rings of Power is tracking a five-year journey as well. The Man in the High Castle had a four-year run (though it really did deserve one more season) as did the sci fi comedy Upload. Fallout looks like it could stick around for a while as does the upcoming Warhammer series. Shows that have been cancelled after one or two seasons include Carnival Row, The Bondsman, The Tick, Utopia, and more.

You can watch Prime Video either by signing up for their Prime service, which also includes free shipping on Amazon orders, or subscribing to Prime Video separately. Prime costs $139 for the annual subscription or $14.99 per month. Prime Video starts at $6.99 per month and that includes ads. Beyond its originals, the streaming service does offer quite a back catalog of sci fi and fantasy television shows such as all the live-action Stargate shows, Farscape, the original Twilight Zone, Eureka, and more.  You can see all the price plans at this link.
