Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on Harry Potter, Murderbot Season 2, TWD: Dead City Season 3, and More

Filming begins on the HBO Harry Potter TV series

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for July 10th and 17th:

Harry Potter (HBO)

This reboot of the J.K. Rowling character is showing up in the most recent Production Weekly Listings, and filming has officially begun on the series. The cast has been set which includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ronald Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Also currently confirmed in the cast are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. With production currently kicking off, the plan is for the first season of the show to premiere late 2026 or early 2027.

Murderbot Season 2 (Apple TV+)

This renewal was announced this past weekend, and the second season of this sci fi comedy is now showing up in the Production Weekly listings. There is no word at this point on what direction the upcoming season will follow, but with seven books (so far) in the Murderbot Diaries book series, there is plenty of source material to draw from. Expect this one to return at some point in 2026.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 (AMC)

The third season renewal for this show was just announced, but it was expected. It showed up in Production Weekly a few weeks ago and again in the most recent list which should put it on track for a Summer 2026 premiere. Following is the official description of the upcoming season:

Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?

Series creator Eli Jorné will be stepping down as showrunner with frequent writer Seth Hoffman taking over those duties.

The Mayfair Witches Season 3 (AMC)

The third season renewal of this supernatural drama was announced in April, and it is showing up again in the Production Weekly listings indicating that they are moving forward with filming and targeting a premiere in early 2026. Interview with the Vampire Season 3 should have its bow in Fall 2025, and the newest entry in the Immortal Universe franchise, Talamasca, is set for October.

Other genre entries from the listings for July 10th and 17th: Crystal Lake (Peacock), Ghosts Season 5 (CBS), Vought Rising (Prime Video).
