Why Was Daredevil: Born Again Cancelled and Can It Be Saved by the Fans?

Daredevil: Born Again will be ending with its upcoming third season, but fans are hoping to convince Disney execs to change their minds on the cancellation and keep the show going.

What Is It?

This series carries on the story of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who, after stepping away from his vigilante persona Daredevil, returns to confront new challenges in New York City. After former crime boss Wilson Fisk becomes mayor of the city, he passes a law turning vigilantes into criminals and begins to aggressively pursue them. Fisk is particularly targeting Daredevil, but the Man Without Fear proves to be much more of a challenge to keep down.

Aired: 2025-27, 3 Seasons Totaling 27 Episodes (Including the Upcoming 3rd Season)

Starring: Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Wilson Bethel, Zabryna Guevara

Created By: Dario Scardapane, Matt Corman, Chris Ord

Why Was It Cancelled?

The Daredevil series that ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2018 proved very popular for that streamer, but the show was cancelled after its third season due to corporate shenanigans when Disney decided to start up its own streaming service, which would act as direct competition to Netflix (more on that at this link). From that came a Save Daredevil campaign that went global and carried on for several years. How much that impacted Disney’s decision to bring the character back is uncertain, but it definitely proved that the show had a large audience.

The Mouse House gave the green light to Daredevil: Born Again, but unfortunately, the original plan was to do a soft reboot with the character. They would keep Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, but dispense with most of the other characters from the Netflix series. And while that version got several episodes into production, Disney/Marvel execs were not happy with it, and the decision was made to have Daredevil: Born Again serve as a direct continuation of the previous series. An eighteen-episode first season was planned, but that was eventually split into Season 1 and Season 2.

The show premiered in March 2025, and while the revival received good marks from critics and fans, it did not manage to crack the Nielsen Top 10 for streaming series during its first-season run. When it returned for a second season a year later, it still did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, though it did earn a third-season renewal. At that time, I predicted that could be its final season, and in September 2026, that was confirmed.

Despite the fact that the show has a large fanbase and that the revival was well-received upon its return, it has yet to draw viewership that matches the Netflix run of the original. In addition, Disney+ has been moving away from ongoing original series, preferring the miniseries approach instead. That makes each series more of an event and eliminates the issue of audience attrition in subsequent seasons. And that appears to be the primary approach for the streamer these days, likely contributing to the decision to end Daredevil: Born Again after its third season (which will stream in Spring 2027).

Can the Fans Save the Show from Cancellation?

Disney is a monolithic corporation and not one that would quickly change one of its business decisions because fans are unhappy with it. That said, it is not impossible to get their attention if the fans make enough noise, and perhaps the House of Mouse could be convinced to bring this show back for another season or at least a special.

The good thing about Daredevil, going back to its Netflix days, is that the show typically wraps up its storyline at the end of each season (the exception is Seasons 1 and 2 of Born Again, which were originally planned as one season). So if they bring the show back for another season, or let’s call it a miniseries, viewers do not necessarily have to have watched all the seasons that preceded it. And they could bring in any number of Marvel superhero guest stars to bolster interest, making it into an event series. They could also bring back any or all of the Defenders (which include Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) and do a series focusing on them. So there is always the possibility that the characters could come back, just not necessarily in an ongoing yearly series.

And fans definitely drew plenty of attention with their campaign after the original series was cancelled, so I expect to be hearing from them again (as Charlie Cox suggested at New York Comic Con). The best thing they can do at this point is to stage watch parties for the show to get it trending in the Disney+ Top 10 and possibly get it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. Subscription drives convincing people to sign up for Disney+ to watch the show (the 2015 series is streaming there as well) would be useful, too, because that appeals to the bottom line, and that will get the attention of company execs. Getting the show trending on social once again would help as well. (You can find more campaign ideas at this link.)

I would say that it is not worth lobbying other streamers to pick up the show because Daredevil: Born Again is part of the MCU and the Mouse House wants to maintain control of the property, but a recent development may suggest otherwise. Disney has licensed the Percy Jackson TV series to Netflix for encore runs, and it has performed well for that streamer. Daredevil did pull strong viewership for Netflix during its original run, so if they had the opportunity to license the show again, they might consider it if there is not too much bad blood left over from the prior situation. I doubt Disney would let the show become a Netflix exclusive again, but if that streamer is interested in picking up encore runs, that might be sufficient to convince the Mouse House to greenlight another season or so, or perhaps a closed-ended miniseries.

The fact is that both Daredevil and Kingpin are well-established in the MCU now and will certainly be showing up again. But fans want more than just guest appearances; they want the series to continue. And if they make enough noise and convince one of the streamers, like Netflix, to pick up encore runs, perhaps the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen could return for more adventures beyond the planned third season.
