American Horror Story Scares Up a Season 14 Renewal

The story has not ended for American Horror Story yet as that horror anthology series has received a fourteenth season renewal from FX. Season 13 premiered at the end of September, and while the linear viewership has not  been particularly high, the streaming numbers on Hulu and Disney+ have been strong. For the first two weeks of its thirteenth season, the show has average an estimated 738 million minutes of viewing based on Nielsen sampling. Those are the best numbers for digital viewing for AHS over its long run, and they apparently encouraged FX execs to keep it going.

I previously thought the the thirteenth season might be the last for the series seeing as that is a good number to for wrapping up a horror show. The viewership had been declining over the past few years, but audiences are tuning back in for the current season which has delivered somewhat of an all-star cast, with many actors who have appeared previously on the show making a return. Whether that trend continues for the upcoming season remains to be seen. The Season 13 finale will air on October 29th, and this renewal announcement could have the fourteenth season on track to premiere Fall 2027.

With this renewal, it is one step closer to passing Futurama on the list of longest-running sci fi and fantasy shows. Both will have fourteen seasons, but Futurama will still have more episodes at 183 (including the three upcoming specials) vs. 155 for AHS (which assumes ten eps for the upcoming fourteenth season). If American Horror Story gets a fifteen season renewal, it will then secure the third slot on that list unless Futurama ends up continuing on a different venue (Hulu is not ordering any more episodes of that one beyond the planned specials).

With this announcement the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2026-27 season moves to 8 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (26% of shows tracked) vs. 12 cancelled and ending (39%), with 2 currently On the Bubble. You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

American Horror Story is a horror anthology series in which each season tells a largely self-contained story featuring new characters, settings, and supernatural or psychological threats. The series explores haunted houses, witchcraft, asylums, cults, serial killers, and other terrifying scenarios, often blending real-world events with fictional horrors. Some of the recurring cast members include Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Lange.

We are still early in the 2026-27 season, and there are several shows from the prior year awaiting word on their fates. Be sure to stay tuned to CancelledSciFi.com and our social media sites for the latest updates on all the current sci-fi and fantasy shows.
